Chapman man seriously injured after SUV crashes into barn

By KMAN Staff on July 17, 2026 Dickinson County, Local News

A 19-year-old Chapman man suffered serious injuries Thursday evening after his SUV left the roadway, struck two culverts and crashed into a barn in Dickinson County, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:34 p.m. July 16 at the intersection of Old U.S. Highway 40 and Nobel Road.

Troopers said a 2018 Ford Escape was traveling westbound on Old U.S. Highway 40 when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The SUV crossed the center line, entered the south ditch, struck a culvert, continued through the ditch, hit a second culvert and then crashed into a barn on the south side of the roadway.

The driver, identified as Nicholas W. Rinehart, 19, of Chapman, was ejected from the vehicle and landed approximately 30 feet in front of the SUV. He was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital with suspected serious injuries.

Rinehart was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
