One construction worker was killed and two others were injured Tuesday morning after a pickup truck crashed into a work zone along I-135 in Saline County, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 9:45 a.m. on northbound I-135 about a half-mile south of Smolan Road.

Troopers said a 2000 Dodge Ram 3500 was traveling north when, for an unknown reason, it crossed onto the right shoulder and struck construction vehicle. The pickup then went into a skid, hit a guardrail, overturned and struck five workers in the grassy area near the guardrail.

One of the workers, 55-year-old Toby L. Marco of Abilene, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. Two other workers, 23-year-old Carson Lee Arndt of Wichita and 23-year-old Kaden Keith Hill of Sedgwick, sustained minor injuries. Four additional workers were not injured.

The driver of the pickup, 35-year-old Robert E. Moore of Coweta, Oklahoma, suffered suspected serious injuries and was transported to Salina Regional Hospital. The highway patrol said Moore was not wearing a seat belt.
