A 39-year-old resident at the El Dorado Correctional Facility died Tuesday after being found unresponsive in his cell.
According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, staff found Andrew Ellmaker unresponsive and began life-saving measures. Emergency medical personnel also responded but were unable to revive him.
The cause of death remains undetermined pending an independent autopsy. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and KDOC are investigating the death, which is standard protocol for deaths involving people in state custody.
Ellmaker was serving a 565-month prison sentence for first-degree murder and aggravated battery convictions in Johnson County.
