The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a 19-year-old man dead early Sunday morning in Kansas City, Kansas.
According to the KBI, Kansas City, Kansas, police officers were initially dispatched to the 500 block of Ohio Avenue at about 12:27 a.m. for a noise complaint. Officers were called back to the area about 20 minutes later following a report of shots fired.
The KBI said officers encountered 19-year-old Leonel Lozoya-Esparza of Kansas City, Kansas, armed with a firearm. Officers ordered Lozoya-Esparza to drop the weapon, but authorities say he did not comply and turned toward officers while holding the firearm.
One officer fired, striking Lozoya-Esparza. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but he died at the scene. No officers were injured.
