A minimum-security resident who escaped from the Wichita Work Release Facility was found dead Friday following a law enforcement search in southwest Wichita.
According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, 36-year-old Jauwon Allen walked away from the facility Thursday night. Investigators later received a tip that Allen may have been at a residence in southwest Wichita.
KDOC agents approached the home Friday and announced their presence before hearing a single gunshot from inside. Agents backed away, established a perimeter and requested assistance from Wichita police and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement later entered the residence and found Allen alone and dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Authorities said no law enforcement officers fired their weapons or were injured.
KDOC and local law enforcement continue to investigate Allen’s escape and the circumstances surrounding his death.
