A 21-year-old woman reported losing nearly $5,900 Wednesday after an unknown suspect allegedly impersonated a police officer over the phone.
Riley County Police filed a theft by deception report at about 2:53 p.m. in the 1100 block of Bluemont Avenue. Police said the suspect impersonated an officer during a phone call and scammed the woman out of $5,888.23.
The RCPD reminded residents to verify the legitimacy of suspicious calls or requests before providing personal information or making payments. Police said the RCPD will never request payment over the phone or ask for payment using barcodes or gift cards.
Anyone who receives a similar call can contact RCPD at 785-537-2112 to verify whether the caller is an RCPD officer or employee.
