COUNCIL GROVE — Riley County closed the regular season sending shockwaves across the state Friday night, defeating 2A No. 3 Council Grove 22-21 at Legion Stadium to hand the Braves their first loss of the season.

The Falcons, ranked No. 14 in 2A, built a 14-point lead in the first half, weathered a 21-point response from Council Grove and reclaimed the lead in the fourth quarter. A safety and a late touchdown proved decisive as Riley County secured second place in District 5 and earned a home playoff game Friday.
