A 47-year-old Topeka man was killed Sunday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting after authorities said he fired a handgun during an attempt to take him into custody.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said two Topeka Police Department officers went to a residence in the 3100 block of Southwest Chelsea Drive at about 4:28 p.m. to locate Michael Wayne Schmidt in connection with a previous incident and arrest.
According to preliminary information, Schmidt allowed officers into the home. When officers attempted to take him into custody, Schmidt fled to a back room and retrieved a firearm.
The KBI said officers ordered Schmidt to drop the gun. Schmidt then allegedly fired a handgun, and one officer returned fire, striking him.
EMS responded, but Schmidt died from his injuries at the scene. No officers were injured.
The KBI is investigating the shooting. Its findings will be presented to the Shawnee County District Attorney when the investigation is complete.
