More than 40 headstones in one of Manhattan’s two city cemeteries were damaged some time between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
The Riley County Police Department filed a report of criminal desecration at 8:53 a.m. Wednesday at Sunset Cemetery. Police said 41 headstones were damaged and knocked down.
City officials announced an updated count Thursday evening.
“We have discovered a total of 49 damaged headstones as of today,” a city representative said. “The total estimated damages — based on the cost to restore the headstones to their bases — is now $19,600.”
The city of Manhattan was the victim of the crime, as it owns and operates Sunset and Sunrise cemeteries. Sunset Cemetery was established in 1860 and spans 45 acres.
A memorial arch at the entrance, constructed in 1917, is dedicated to Riley County soldiers of the Civil War, reading, “…Our Union Soldiers — 1861-1865.”
An RCPD representative said the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and anyone with information can submit tips to RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers.
