The Riley County Police Department executed a search warrant on Friday that resulted in the arrests of three Manhattan residents. Police executed the search warrant at approximately 1:57 pm in the 3000 block of Claflin Road. Police arrested 41-year-old Stephanie Taylor, 28-year-old Grier Griffin and 32-year-old Colton Gardner at various times throughout the afternoon in connection to the search warrant. Taylor is charged with a slew of probable cause offenses that includes the distribution of opiates, distribution of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia with the intent to distribute for illegal use. The Manhattan-Ogden School Board approved the purchase of new iPads Wednesday night for classrooms, though not without some pushback from one board member. Katie Allen stated her opposition to purchasing more technology due to studies that found that the addition of technology in the classroom did not improve reading or writing standards with students. She says it may also lead to potential data breaches, similar to the one experienced at Kansas State University last month. The purchase was approved 5-1, with Allen dissenting. The City of Manhattan is expected to announce the start of the East Manhattan Gateway Plan process next week. The city will be hosting a couple of community open houses on Monday and Tuesday allowing for residents to share their thoughts on what should go into the plan. The first meeting will be held from 4:30 to 6 on Monday at the Army National Guard at 721 Levee Drive and the second meeting will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 5:30 at the Crestview Christian Church on 3940 Excel Road. At Wednesday’s USD 383 meeting, board members and administrators congratulated Ashlyn Kuhlmann on winning the 2024 Kansas Horizon Award which is sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education. According to the KSDE website, the goal of the award is to “recognize exemplary first-year teachers who perform and distinguishes themselves as outstanding.” Every year, KSDE chooses 32 recipients for the award. Kuhlmann is a social studies teacher at Manhattan High School and a graduate of Kansas State University. She was presented with a certificate prior to Wednesday’s meeting.

The USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden School Board will hold its first meeting in the month of February on Wednesday night. The main item of business on tonight’s agenda is a mid-year report on enrollment in USD 383. According to documents from the school district, over 6,000 students are enrolled in USD 383 schools. New business items include a technology equipment purchase, upgrades to the Eisenhower Middle School gym, and a change order on the Lincoln Education Center when it comes to the asbestos and lead paint abatement. The meeting gets underway at the Robinson Education Center at 6:30 p.m.
