The Sunset Zoo has a new tiger at their zoo. Marketing and development officer Melissa Kirkwood spoke about the new tiger on In Focus. Jaya is a Malayan tiger and comes from the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas after spending almost the last two years at that zoo. Jaya moved into the zoo on Jan. 16. In Aug. 2022, he fathered three cubs with a female tiger. According to Little Rock Zoo staff, Jaya is a very laid back and mellow cat. Manhattan City Commissioners were presented with a slew of plans Tuesday aimed at creating more housing in Manhattan. City staff presented potential strategies toward addressing housing challenges through Rural Housing Incentive Districts, Industrial Revenue Bonds, Moderate Income Housing grants and the city’s workforce housing sales tax. The 2023 Economic Recovery and Relief Sales Tax is dedicated 70% to debt and infrastructure, 20% to jobs and 10% to workforce housing. The current Economic Development Policies focus on the 20% dedicated to jobs. The 21st Judicial District Nominating Commission has selected a new district magistrate judge in Clay and Riley County. John McNish, a private practice attorney from Marysville, will replace the late Judge Bill Malcolm who passed away on Oct. 15, 2023. McNish beat out Daniel Brenner of Holton and Audrey Waid of Clay Center for the position. McNish currently works for his own firm Bolton & McNish LLC in Marysville. Kansas State University is dealing with disruptions to some computer services as a result of a recent cybersecurity incident. In a statement Tuesday, the university confirmed the incident is impacting certain network systems, including VPN, K-State Today emails and videos on its Canvas and Mediasite accounts. University officials say immediate steps were taken to investigate the disruption, isolating areas of concern. Impacted systems were taken offline and will remain offline for the immediate future as an investigation continues. The cybersecurity issue comes as spring classes got underway Wednesday. The Manhattan City Commission unanimously approved the Parks and Recreation Department’s Cemeteries Master Plan Tuesday night. The plan will see upgrades to infrastructure within Sunset and Sunrise Cemeteries, including an eventual new building for equipment at the latter and a joint maintenance facility to be shared between Sunset Zoo and Sunset Cemetery as well. Overall costs will be about $6 million for upgrades to Sunset Cemetery and over $3 million to Sunrise Cemetery. No projects are currently in the works, but Tuesday’s approval gives city officials some guidance on future funding mechanisms and strategies to achieve some of these projects.…
