The Riley County government will now have more power to go after local nuisances in unincorporated areas, something that has been a long time coming, local officials said. Senate Bill 384, which Gov. Laura Kelly signed in April, sets up procedures for the removal and abatement of nuisances in the unincorporated areas of the county. Riley County deputy county counselor Bryant Parker said Thursday the bill will give the government more authority to stop nuisances from going unaddressed. A local chiropractor who was found guilty of sexual battery on a patient in April was released earlier this week from house arrest. Kenyon Erickson, who owned Erickson Chiropractor in Aggieville, was sentenced to 12 months in prison back on May 21. Erickson and the court came to an agreement that he would serve his sentence at home. On Monday, Judge Grant Bannister gave Erickson probation for the remaining 9 months of his sentence. The City of Manhattan announced on Wednesday the hiring of a new Director of Public Utilities for the city. Kevin Niles, who is the current Utilities Director in Odessa, Texas, will begin his work for the city beginning on Sept. 3. Niles is set to oversee the recently reconstructed Public Utilities Department, which provides services for Manhattan and surrounding infrastructure. More on this story can be found at the Mercury.

Riley County Police are investigating after it was reported that the City of Randolph was defrauded by a scammer. Officers filed the report just after 7 pm on Tuesday after city officials in Randolph reported that a unknown suspect posing as a consultant group defrauded the city out of $40,000. The city is listed as the victim in this case. Officers encourage anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. Due to this being an active investigation, no further information will be released at this time.
K-State is set to host the livestock industry next Tuesday for a discussion on sustainability for the Ogallala aquifer. In a press release, the university announced on Wednesday that the Kansas Water Institute will host the event in partnership with the Kansas Livestock Association and Aimpoint Research to address water conservation from each point of the value chain. Representatives from K-State and the Livestock Association will join Aimpoint to deliver a report about aquifer stability and the livestock industry’s stability in Kansas that can serve as a future framework.
