A former Manhattan firefighter was killed while fighting a house fire in Wichita last week. Ty Voth, 27, was killed while battling a house fire in the 9800 block of S. Laura Street near Haysville, a suburb south of Wichita last Thursday. Voth, who spent the last five years as a firefighter in Wichita, began his career in Manhattan before graduating from Newton High School in 2015. Gov. Former Manhattan Mayor Wynn Butler received diversion this week in Manhattan Municipal Court for an incident in May in which he crashed drunk into a liquor store. Butler, with his attorney, Joshua Douglass, accepted the diversion agreement before Municipal Court Judge James Kepple on Tuesday morning. In the document, obtained through an open records request, Butler agreed to complete 40 hours of community service, attend a drug and alcohol evaluation, and pay $1,348 to the city. Diversion programs call for fines between $800 and $1,500. People are eligible if they have no prior alcohol convictions and didn’t kill anyone in…

Kansas Congressman Tracey Mann thanked constituents following his easy victory in the Republican primary on Tuesday evening as he seeks a third term in the U.S. House in the strongly Republican 1st Congressional District. A local man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon for violating his probation after he had been previously arrested for domestic battery. Police arrested 45-year-old Latorris Franklin of Manhattan at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the Riley County District Courthouse for violating his probation. Franklin had been previously arrested on charges of domestic battery and violating a protection order. Franklin was booked into Riley County Jail and remains confined on a $10,000 at the time of this report.

Riley County Police are investigating a report of shots being fired through a ceiling at an apartment complex in Manhattan. Officers filed the report in the 1700 block of Laramie Street just after 10:45 p.m. when a 26-year-old male came home to find a bullet hole in his ceiling, his countertop and dishwasher. When officers arrived, they found the suspect and arrested him for criminal discharge of a firearm, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers listed the 26-year-old male as the victim as well as the public. The case remains under investigation.

The Manhattan Fire Department were dispatched late on Monday night to an apartment fire near the K-State campus. Crews responded to the 1200 block of Kearney Street just after 11 p.m. to find smoke and fire upon entering apartment 4. Crews then found a small stove fire and were able to extinguish it shortly there after. A total of 18 firefighters responded on six fire apparatus with the last units clearing at around 1 a.m. Total loss from the fire is $11,000, with $10,000 of the damage coming to the structure. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Repairs are set to begin on Wednesday as crews from Ebert Construction will begin repairing and resurfacing Anderson from Seth Child/K-113 to Wreath Avenue. This full-depth replacement work is expected to last until late fall. There will be no detour and one-lane traffic will be maintained in both directions at all times. Drivers should expect some disruptions as various drive entrances are closed for repairs. Access to local business will be maintained throughout the project.
