The new legislature convened in Topeka on Monday under an expanded Republican supermajority in the House and Senate. Currently, the GOP controls 88 House seats and 31 Senate seats, the most seats they’ve held since Kelly was first elected Governor in 2018. Two county commissioners, four county office holders and two judges were sworn-in at Monday’s county commission meeting in Riley County following the November elections. On the county commission, Greg McKinley and Kathryn Focke were both sworn-in to four-year terms by County Clerk Rich Vargo. Both McKinley and Focke were re-elected in November after being unopposed in the election. Amongst the county office holders, County Attorney Barry Wilkerson, County Clerk Vargo, County Treasurer Shilo Hegar and County Register of Deeds Amy Manges were all sworn-in to four terms. Two women were arrested on Monday morning for drug possession in Ogden. Officers arrested 26-year-old Leslie Young and 27-year-old Brittany Conrad just prior to 10:30 in the 200 block of Seventh Street. Officers charged Young with single counts of use/possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia into the human body, unlawfully obtaining a prescription drug, possession of a depressant and failure to appear. Meanwhile, Conrad was charged with use/possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia into the human body, driving under the influence of drugs or a combination of drugs, driving with a suspended license and failure to appear. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that a Wamego woman died following a car crash early Friday morning on Highway 24 near Belvue. The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident has been identified as Mary Miller, 22, of Wamego. Law enforcement say Miller was driving a 2014 Ford Fusion as she headed eastbound around 6:45 a.m. that morning when her vehicle skidded on the icy road and crossed the center lane striking a 2014 GMC Sierra head on that was going westbound. A Manhattan man was arrested Sunday after picking up multiple charges. Officers arrested Daniel Brassill, 45, just prior to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in the 800 block of Fremont Street. Brassill is charged in this case with four counts of violating a protection order. Bond has been set at $12,000 in this case. He remains confined at the time of this report. According to preliminary results, 2024 was considered a more active year for severe weather in Kansas than in the last five years. According to scientists at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, 89 tornadoes were reported across the state in 2024, compared to just 39 reported in 2023. The most powerful tornado to impact the state was an EF-3 Tornado that hit Westmoreland on Apr. 30, 2024, resulting in one fatality – Ann Miller – a lifelong Pottawatomie County resident and a 28-year employee at the county health department, and the loss of 22 homes. School districts across the country have been impacted by a cybersecurity breach affecting the PowerSchool Student Information System. PowerSchool is a software used to keep track student’s report cards, fill out school forms or put money in cafeteria accounts. USD 320 Wamego was affected by the breach. Superintendent Rob McKim said that the district was currently trying to determine what information was taken. USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden Schools does not use PowerSchool but does use Infinite Campus for their system information system, which has not been affected. Not only was the weekend’s snowfall the second-most in Manhattan’s recorded history, but few other winter storms have even come close. Winter Storm Blair blanketed Manhattan with nearly 15 inches of snow, a total surpassed only by the 18 inches received on Feb. 27, 1900. However, Kansas Mesonet assistant meteorologist Chip Redmond said according to his records, it’s the first time in more than a century Manhattan has seen more than 13 inches of snow. “The last time we received that much was in 1913,” Redmond said.
