At Monday’s Parks and Rec Advisory Board meeting, board members were presented with the city’s proposal for the Move! MHK Master Plan that includes a potential $37 million indoor aquatics center. Public comment as well as board member opinions were mixed at Monday’s meeting, with several on both sides of the issues, noting cost, location and size as some of the specific concerns. Pottawatomie County officials provided an update Wednesday on the recovery effort in Westmoreland following last week’s tornado. Public Information Officer Becky Ryan spoke about the county’s new landfill and recycling policy for those in Westmoreland. Ryan says residents can take their recycling to other nearby counties if needed, such as Nemaha and Riley County. Ryan also explains what residents can do with additional storm debris. The response from surrounding communities has been described as “overwhelming” by local officials. A Manhattan man is jailed following a Thursday arrest on a slew of drug charges, and is linked to the death of an 18-year-old woman in May of 2023. The Riley County Police Department says 21-year-old Luke Patrick Johnson was located in Pottawatomie County and taken into custody on four separate warrants from Riley County. Charges against him include distribution of a controlled substance causing death, three counts of aggravated battery, four separate distribution counts, two counts of child endangerment and use of a communication facility. The Los Angeles Rams made K.T. Leveston the 254th overall selection in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft, making the former Wildcat left tackle the third K-State player to be selected in this year’s draft behind Ben Sinnott and Cooper Beebe. The Dallas Cowboys selected Cooper Beebe with the 73rd overall selection in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The unanimous All-Ameirca and KC Piper alum Beebe had one of the most storied careers in the history of the K-State football program and joins a Dallas team that was in desperate need of offensive line help. Beebe was also an Outland Trophy finalist in 2023 and was a two-time Big 12 Offensive Linemen of the Year in 2022 and 2023. The Washington Commanders selected Ben Sinnott with the 53rd overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Sinnott, a two-time first All-Big 12 selection, was the second tight end to be taken in this year’s draft just behind Brock Bowers of Georgia. Sinnott went from a walk-on in Manhattan to one of the nation’s best tight ends by the time his career came to an end in the Little Apple. TOPEKA — Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced on Wednesday that she had vetoed five bills related to tax reform that passed with near unanimous support in both chambers of the Kansas legislature earlier this month. In a press release, Kelly called the tax bills passed in the legislature “unsustainable” for the state’s long term fiscal health pointing to previous tax cut experiments by former Gov.
