A 31-year-old California man has entered into a plea agreement in relation to a February 2020 shooting near Aggieville. Travell Hairston was scheduled for trial this week, but reportedly accepted a plea agreement with the Riley County Attorney’s office. Details are unknown at this time. National Day of the Cowboy was celebrated Saturday at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Assistant Director of Development Stephen Bridenstine says the event drew a large turnout thanks to its many community partners. Those who came out Saturday enjoyed wagon rides, cowboy tic-tac-toe, horseshoes, roping and live entertainment from Miss Rodeo K-State and an old time medicine show.
Construction continues today on Browning Avenue in Manhattan. This is the second phase of a concrete maintenance project to replace the concrete pavement on the roadway surface as well as install new curbs and gutters. During this phase of construction, the portion of the roadway currently under construction will be reopened to traffic, but only for trips heading north to Marlatt Avenue. USD 383 has recently hired a new Assistant Superintendent following the promotion of Eric Reid to Superintendent. Nathan Downs began his new role on Jul. 1 after spending the last five years at the executive director of special education at USD 475. He began his career as a school psychologist in Wamego. Downs said he was very grateful for the new opportunity and was happy to work with people who are very committed to their job. Downs is expected to make an annual salary $127,000 in his new position.
The American Red Cross, Riley County EMS, Manhattan Fire Department and Riley County Police Department will be hosting the 20th annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive this week. The event starts at 11:30 today and goes through 6:00pm at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church at the 2900 block of Kimball Avenue in Manhattan. All-day preliminary examinations took place Friday for a pair of suspects at the center of a Riley County murder investigation 24-year-old Jordan Prather and 27-year-old Edward Wright are both charged in the February 2022 shooting death of 21-year-old Joshua Wardi, a Fort Riley soldier gunned down outside an Aggieville bar. The pair, along with 21-year-old Tremelle Montgomery are each charged with single counts of 1st-degree murder and three counts each of aggravated assault. A 29-year-old man was arrested in Manhattan on Friday night. Jaylen Mason of Junction City was arrested at 10:17pm at the Columbine Apartments at the 1200 block of Yuma Street. He was charged with one count of burglary dwelling for felony, theft or sex and one count of distribution of an opiate or narcotic with a dosage less than 100 units. Mason is currently confined in Riley County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
The new McCool’s Bar and Kitchen will have its ribbon cutting next week. The ribbon cutting for the restaurant will be at 4:00pm this Tuesday at 710 North Manhattan Avenue in Aggieville. The restaurant was opened earlier this year after the building was renovated following the closure of 785. Members from the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce will be attendance for the ribbon cutting.
A former USD 383 nurse was sentenced to prison in Riley County District Court on Thursday for child sex crimes. 45-year-old Joshua Penabaz was sentenced to life in prison on two counts of indecent liberties with a child. The charges include a possibility for parole after 25 years in prison. Penabaz had previously plead guilty to the charges back in April which come under Jessica’s Law. Penabaz’s defense team filed a motion for departure and requested a reduced sentence of 12.5 years in prison, but it was rejected by Judge Kendra Lewison who ordered Penabaz to also pay over $3,000…
Four dangerous stretches of Kansas highways will be receiving increased traffic enforcement in the near future. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) announced on Wednesday the new Safety Corridor Pilot Project, which is targeting four highways based on their histories of deadly and injurious wrecks. Among these highways is the US-24 highway west of Topeka. “The safety corridors were selected based on a history of fatal and serious injury crashes, availability of additional law enforcement and input from local transportation safety partners,” the state agency said. “From 2016 to 2021, over 500 crashes occurred on these corridors resulting in 35…
