Riley County commissioners on Monday approved three new members to the body overseeing police. Gary Olds and county commissioners Greg McKinley and Kathryn Focke will serve on the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency Board beginning Jan. 1. McKinley will fill the spot reserved for a county commissioner, currently held by John Ford, whose term is expiring. Geary County USD 475 and the Junction City Education Association announced on Tuesday that Westwood Elementary kindergarten teacher Stephanie Sowell and Fort Riley sixth grade language arts teacher Mary McConnell were the district’s nominees for the Kansas Master Teacher Award. Sowell was named the USD 475 Elementary Master Teacher Award nominee while McConnell claimed the Secondary Master Teacher Award nomination. By receiving this nomination, both women received a $500 check from Sunflower Bank of Junction City and will be recognized for their nomination at an upcoming Board of Education meeting. RCPD filed a report for motor vehicle theft on Monday afternoon after it was reported someone stole a trailer from Midwest Ace Hardwear in Manhattan. Officers filed the report just after 12:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard when the owners of Midwest Ace reported an unknown subject had stolen a 6-by-12 enclosed trailer from the property. Total loss with this report is unknown at this time. RCPD encourages anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. Riley County public works officials announced on Monday that the Kitten Creek Culvert Replacement project will begin at the start of the new year. Andrea Rose, administrative assistant with Riley County Public Works, said the project will begin on Thursday Jan. 2 and last 45 days with the hope of the project being completed by Mar. 6, weather permitting. During the project, Kitten Creek Road will be closed to through traffic between Anderson Avenue and N. 52nd Street. A traffic control will be installed during the project.

A Manhattan man was taken to a local hospital on Friday after he drove his car into a concrete building. Officers responded to the corner of S. Seth Child Road and Farm Bureau Road at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon to find a man injured after he struck a concrete building in his 2014 GMC Sierra. Officers report that the man, 42-year-old James Miller of Manhattan, was transported by EMS to Via Christi in Manhattan for a suspected serious injury. He was later transported to Stormont Vail for more advanced care. His status as of Monday is unknown. Click here…

Leaders of a local youth football program have wanted to use Bishop Stadium for years, but the USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden school board hasn’t allowed it. Buck Driggs, president of the Manhattan Youth Football Association, said the organization has held five games a year at K-State’s Bill Snyder Family Stadium. However, efforts to use the district’s stadium in CiCo Park have failed. “Coming from a small town, it’s hard to fathom that a town the size of Manhattan has no place for us to play our local youth football games,” Driggs said. Two Topeka residents were arrested at a local retailer on Wednesday for their role in three shoplifting incidents at Ulta Beauty, Best Buy and Water’s True Value in Manhattan. Officers arrested 53-year-old Christopher Stapleton and 50-year-old Nicole Hall just after 1:30 p.m. at the Best Buy in the 300 block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard. Stapleton was charged in this case with three counts of theft of property or services with a value of $1500 or less in the past 72 hours. A local resident has been arrested in association with several motor vehicle burglaries that occurred across the area over the last few weeks. On Tuesday, officers arrested 19-year-old Alexander Darnell for his role in some of the burglaries. Officers charge Darnell is this case with probable cause offenses of motor vehicle theft with a value between $1500 and $25,000, interference with law enforcement, two counts of possession of an opiate or stimulant, possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia and vehicle burglary. RCPD filed a report for aggravated battery on Monday following an incident between two 14-year-old boys in Manhattan. Officers filed the report just prior to 12:45 p.m. in the 700 block of Pebblebrook Circle when one of the 14-year-olds hit the other 14-year-old over the head with a beer bottle twice. The beer bottle proceeded to shatter over the one boy leading to medical attention being required. No further details were released at this time.

Sheriff’s deputies in Pottawatomie County arrested a local woman on Monday after reports were filed in Riley County of two stolen vehicles. RCPD filed the report of motor vehicle theft in the 500 block of S. 15th Street just prior to 7 a.m. on Monday when a service vehicle was stolen by an unknown suspect. Officers listed Olgoonik Enterprises as the victim in this case. While investigating, officers discovered a second vehicle had gone missing – a 2012 GMC Denali.
