Budget and Finance Officer Brittany Philips presented a budgetary change to the Riley County Commission on Monday. Due to an error made with the Rural Fire district budget, the Riley County Commission has approved a change made to the overall budget. This will reduce the mill levy from 8.914 to 7.737, an overall reduction in ad valorem taxes by $187,998. Commissioner John Ford asked for clarifications in procedure. Riley County Police reported that a 35-year-old woman has been hospitalized following a shooting in Aggieville. RCPD officers responded to multiple gunshots in the 1100 block of Laramie Street shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. Officers discovered a 35 year old woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her back. Her injuries are not life-threatening. The woman was transported to Via Christi for her injuries. No arrests have been made, RCPD is investigating at this time. Anyone with information can reach out to Crime Stoppers for a potential reward up to $1,000.
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning in effect from noon Saturday through Wednesday evening. Riley County Emergency Management has also issued a no-burn notice. They also listed seven precautions to take during these extreme heat events. Never leave children or pets alone in a hot vehicle, check on family members and neighbors, wear loose fitting clothing and stay hydrated, know the signs of heat stroke and exhaustion, avoid activities outdoors, and check on pets and ensure they have plenty of cool water. Manhattan celebrated Stormont Vail Health’s new campus with a ribbon cutting Friday CEO Dr. Robert Kenagy gave a little bit of history about the project and why it began. Vice President and Regional Administrator for Stormont Vail Mary Martell thanked Radina’s for opening a new coffee shop in their lobby, noting it had already become a signature part of the Stormont experience. Martell says the facility is fully operational, and has been since July. Next week will mark the start of normal operations. RCPD arrested 40-year-old Brandon Cameron for aggravated burglary and sexual assault. Officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 11:45 p.m. on August 12. The call came from a 26-year-old woman reporting a burglary in the 1300 block of Flint Hills Place. Officers discovered that a sexual assault had occurred during the burglary. Officers investigated, and arrested Cameron at 4:30 a.m. on August 13th. Cameron remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a bond of $200,000. Due to the nature of the crime, no further information will be released.
Saturday was National Garage Sale day, and K-State celebrated by having a garage sale of their own. Thousands gathered outside Bramlage Coliseum to have a chance to buy some Wildcat memoribilia and collectibles. A wide variety of of items were available, including team-issued gear, game-used jerseys, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and more. Fans came from all around, and KMAN spoke to some. The equipment sale was part of K-State’s Fall Season Preview, which also included an open house at the new Morgan Family Arena and a K-State volleyball scrimmage.
The City of Wamego is planning a major street project in the near future. City Manager Stacy Eichem says five streets are included within the scope of the overall project. While one of the streets recently were completed, projects are planned along Spruce, Vine, Chestnut, and Walnut from 4th to 8th street, and all side streets in between. The four year project is being handled by Byers Construction, through four sections, each approximately with a one year timeline. The Riley County Commission heard a number of updates at Thursday’s meeting. Supervision Officer II Sandi Harper presented about on-call staffing issues they are presently facing in Community Corrections, noting the department has been running with four on-call officers for the past year, the lowest amount in many years. Recently the department has had to use existing officers to cover some regular shifts. Harper says it does not cost any extra money for eight versus four on-call officers, as only one at a time is on the clock at any given time. Finance and Budget Officer Brittany Philips presented Monday to the Riley County Commission the bids for the temporary note approved to pay for sewer projects. The funds are for the University Park Sewer District and the Lake Park Sewer District. They are intended to pay a portion of preliminary costs of engineering, design, and construction of a non-discharging lagoon. Philips said: Commissioners made a motion that would refer the bids back to staff for recommendation, as recommended by Philips. Riley County Public Information Officer Vivienne Leyva presented commissioners Thursday with results of a July public survey, regarding a potential switch to a 4 day, 40 hour work week. Leyva spoke about the first question on the survey. Close to 2,000 respondents took the survey, with greater than half saying the new schedule would make Riley County offices more accessible for them. Question 2 asked preference for extended hours to conduct business. About 22 percent of digital respondents to the survey said visiting early morning or late evening would be better, with a small amount preferring evenings. Paper polls were…
