MANHATTAN — Arraignment for a Manhattan man accused in the death of an infant last fall has been delayed until next month. D’Khari Lyons, 23, appeared with counsel at a hearing Monday where Judge Meryl Wilson granted a continuance for 30 days. No plea was entered in court. Lyons is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 2-month-old Michael Calvert Jr. He remains incarcerated in Riley County Jail. TOPEKA — The Kansas Senate last week pushed legislation through the chamber which would greatly reduce income taxes, to the tune of about $190 million. The bill now heads to the Kansas House. While it may bring potential tax relief to the state, the bill also would limit the state’s ability to push ahead on some of Gov. Laura Kelly’s agenda items including a proposed increase to public education funding. MANHATTAN — A Morris County man was arrested Monday morning at a Manhattan motel on a pair of warrants out of Sedgwick and Harvey counties. Riley County Police, in coordination with the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office and the Wichita Police Department responded to 200 Tuttle Creek Blvd, the Super 8 motel, just before 9 a.m. Officers arrested 25-year-old Jeffrey Vermont Porter of Wilsey on a $250,000 Sedgwick County warrant for attempted homicide and a no bond Harvey County warrant for probation violation. MANHATTAN — Kansas State Police arrested a Manhattan Christian College basketball player early Saturday morning at Haymaker Hall on the K-State campus. According to the Riley County Police Department arrest report, 21-year-old DeAngelo Bell was arrested shortly before 2:30 a.m. on charges of flee or attempt to elude officers. Other charges included burglary of a non-dwelling, theft of property or services and attempted burglary. Additional details are currently pending a complete investigation from K-State Police. MANHATTAN — With the start of spring just over six weeks away, the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department is busy working to fill a number of part-time seasonal positions. Community Relations Officer Melissa Kirkwood says the department is one of the largest employers within the city during the spring and summer time. A variety of options exists and Kirkwood says there are opportunities for just about any age. Kirkwood says recruiting is underway now, with some jobs starting as early as March and April. KANSAS CITY — A Manhattan High sophomore is among 41 young high school women being recognized for accomplishments and aspirations in computing and technology. Alice Le was named an honorable mention recipient of the National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing. She was among 18 females listed as honorable mention award recipients in addition to 20 award winners and three rising star recipients. MANHATTAN — A Manhattan man is facing fraud charges stemming from an incident this week. According to the Riley County Police Department arrest report, 51-year-old Anthony Ray Moss was arrested on multiple charges Thursday including two counts of forgery, two counts of making false information, theft by deception and mistreatment of a dependent adult. He’s also charged with giving five worthless checks, including one valued greater than $25,000 and four others listed at less than $1,000. Moss was arrested in the 400 block of South 17th Street. MANHATTAN — Despite frigid conditions this winter, the city of Manhattan has gotten by with minimal impacts to the city’s water system. Water main breaks can be more common in the winter months in extreme cold, given the age of the infrastructure. Manhattan Assistant Public Works Director Randy DeWitt says fluctuating weather conditions can impact underground utilities. Other cities across the region, such as Topeka and Emporia have already battled multiple water main breaks this season. MANHATTAN — Weather conditions are improving in the Manhattan area but bitter cold temperatures will continue through most of the weekend. Road crews were busy early Thursday morning making their first swipes through the ice and snow. Pottawatomie County Public Works Director Peter Clark said they anticipated being able to get most major roads and highways passable by mid-morning. Update 3:30 p.m. Wednesday The National Weather Service late Wednesday extended a Winter Weather Advisory for Riley, Pottawatomie and surrounding counties until noon Thursday. The potential remains high for an icy, slick mix of freezing drizzle, sleet and snow late Wednesday into Thursday. Total ice accumulations of up to two-tenths of an inch are possible with this system. In fact, several counties further east toward Kansas City are under an ice storm warning until noon Thursday where higher ice accumulations are expected.
