K-State won it’s first Big 12 series of the season in thrilling fashion 6-4 over Baylor on Friday night at Tointon Family Stadium. Blair DeBord’s infield single in the bottom of the eighth scored the two go-ahead runs to break a 4-4 tie and push the Wildcats ahead one final time in a back-and-forth game. DeBord dove headfirst to beat out the throw and was called safe, though replays showed the throw beat him to the bag. Bruce Weber’s contract has been extended by a year through the 2018-19 season after leading the Wildcats to another NCAA tournament appearance. The extension was approved unanimously by the K-State Athletics, Inc., Board of Directors, the school announced Wednesday. Weber won’t get a pay increase, but he would be in line for a $500,000 retention bonus if he stays at K-State through the end of the contract on April 30, 2019. His salary next season will be $1.85 million, with an increase of $100,000 for each remaining year on the contract. He would make $2.25 million during the final year…

Manhattan High pitcher Jesse Steinbring threw a seven inning perfect game to help the Indians sweep Topeka High 7-0 and 2-0 Friday at Hummer Sports Complex in Topeka. Steinbring needed just 73 pitches in the 2-0 win in game two. He struck out nine Topeka High Trojans en route to the perfect game as well. The Indians racked up 12 hits to get the seven runs in game one. They struck for two in the third and three in the fifth to blow the game open. Catcher Alex Huerta led Manhattan with 3 RBI’s in the two wins.

K-State jumped all over arch-rival Kansas with a five-run first inning to take game one from the Jayhawks 10-0 at Tointon Family Stadium Friday night. The Wildcats sent ten batters to the plate in the first, with the big blow being a three-run home run from freshman Tanner DeVinny. R.J. Santigate also had an RBI single in the frame. Meanwhile, K-State starter Levi MaVorhis retired the first 15 batters he faced and finished with his second complete game shutout of the season. For the second time this season, K-State’s Ross Kivett is the Big 12 player of the week. Kivett hit .588 (10-for-17) with three doubles, a triple and a home run while racking up seven RBI in four games during the week. He hit for the cycle in a 12-6 win over Nebraska on Wednesday, the first Wildcat to do so since 1997. He had multiple hits in all three of the games this past weekend against Creighton in Omaha to help lead the Wildcats to a series win. Sunrise Christian Academy (Wichita) forward Marvin Clark has committed to Michigan State over offers from K-State, Indiana, Seton Hall, Iowa State and others. Clark, who is a versatile forward at 6-foot-6, was targeted by K-State with their last available scholarship for 2014. He joins his Sunrise Christian teammate Lourawls Narin as a Michigan State commitment. K-State already has commitments from junior college power forward Stephen Hurt and high school guard Tre Harris for the class of 2014.

K-State’s new women’s basketball coach is TCU’s Jeff Mittie, the school announced today in a press release. Mittie has been at TCU for the past 15 seasons and has 454 career wins and 15 postseason appearances as a head coach. In those 15 seasons at TCU, he took the Horned Frogs to nine NCAA tournaments. “I want to thank President Schulz and Athletic Director Currie for giving me this opportunity,” Mittie said in a release. Levi MaVorhis threw a complete game, two-hit shutout to lead K-State to a 10-0 win over Northern Colorado. The win is K-State’s eighth in a row, and the two-hitter was the first at K-State since Chase Mitchell two-hit Kansas in 2005. MaVorhis retired the first 18 batters he faced before Northern Colorado’s Jake Ekman led off the 7th inning with a line drive that went just over the glove of K-State’s Carter Yagi at second base. Marcus Foster is now a second team all-big 12 selection by the Associated Press and the Big 12 coaches. Foster was named to the coaches second team on Sunday and picked up the AP honor Monday morning. He was also named to the coaches all-newcomer team. Will Spradling and Thomas Gipson were both honorable mention selections by the coaches, but no one other than Foster received any mention from the AP.
