K-State didn’t quite crack the initial top 25, but the Wildcats received 113 votes to top the list of other teams receiving votes in the first coaches poll of 2013. This essentially puts K-State at number 26 heading into the season. K-State finished 11th in the final coaches poll of 2012 after finishing with an 11-2 record. This year’s Wildcats return ten starters overall, but must replace nine starters from a year ago on defense as well as Heisman finalist Collin Klein. Head Coach Bill Snyder didn’t have to go far to find his next fullback. Manhattan High’s Winston Dimel committed to K-State on Friday, and will likely move from tight end to fullback with the Wildcats. “I talked to Coach Snyder today,” Dimel said. “He said I would play kind of like (current K-State fullback) Glenn Gronkowski does. A fullback and an H-back.” Being the son of K-State co-offensive coordinator Dana Dimel, Winston is no stranger to the K-State program. The loss of Angel Rodriguez has left K-State’s point guard situation for 2013-14 up in the air. Rodriguez transferred to Miami this offseason, and K-State’s returning experience at the position left with him. The most capable candidate to take over might be incoming Freshman Jevon Thomas, arguably K-State’s most heralded recruit of the 2013 class. As of right now Thomas wouldn’t be eligible until the end of the first semester at K-State next year. That would mean he couldn’t practice or play with the team until December 13th. After averaging 4.8 points and 16.6 minutes a game in NBA summer league play with the Orlando Magic, Rodney McGruder will now being play with the Charlotte Bobcats in the Las Vegas NBA summer league. McGruder saw action in all five games that the Magic played in the Orlando summer league season. His best performance came in game one when he scored 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting in only 11 minutes on the floor. K-State, representing Team USA at the World University Games, swept Norway 25-18, 25-15, 25-16 to avoid elimination on Saturday morning in Russia. The Wildcats used a 5-0 run to take a 13-12 lead in the first set and they never looked back. The only other deficit K-State faced was 3-2 in the second set. Rodney McGruder and Jordan Henriquez each played over 24 minutes in their final NBA summer league games Friday. Henriquez followed up yesterday’s line of six points and eight rebounds with seven points and seven rebounds in just over 31 minutes of action in an 85-77 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He shot 3-10 from the floor in the loss. It was the first start of the summer league season for Henriquez. McGruder scored three points and grabbed four rebounds in nearly 25 minutes on the floor during a 102-83 loss to the Boston Celtics. Former Manhattan High School standout…

K-State nearly took the second set from the Czech Republic in their second match of the World University Games for Team USA, but the Wildcats fell in straight sets 14-25, 25-27 and 14-25. Team USA racked up 10 blocks in the match, including five in the second set alone. K-State center B.J. Finney is on the Rimington Trophy watch list for a second straight season. The Rimington Trophy is given annually to the nation’s premier center in college football. Finney is the first Wildcat to be a two-time nominee, and is the fifth overall to be on the watch list. Nick Leckey was a finalist in 2003. Last year Finney was a first team All-Big 12 selection after K-State’s Big 12 championship run. Rodney McGruder made the most of his NBA summer league debut with the Orlando Magic, scoring 11 points in just 11 minutes of action during Orlando’s 95-88 win over the Boston Celtics Sunday afternoon. McGruder made three of five shots from the floor, including two three pointers, and connected on all three of his free throw attempts. Former Oklahoma Sooner Romero Osby tied for the Orlando scoring lead with 18 points in 24 minutes. The Magic will play the Oklahoma City Thunder at 10:00 AM Monday.
