Thursday’s In Focus program featured our monthly visit from the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce. Guests included Director of Economic Development Trent Armbrust discussing new business ribbon cuttings, entrepreneurship and economic development opportunities happening in the region. Director of Membership Sharla Meisenheimer spoke about Small Business Saturday and why it’s so vital to the local economy.  Region Reimagined Program Director Christy Rodriguez also was introduced and gave a brief synopsis of some exciting things she’ll be bringing to the region in the coming months.

Facing a severe blood shortage after storms and disasters around the nation, the American Red Cross has issued a call for donations of all blood types — especially from people with blood types O positive and negative. As a result, local Red Cross branches are advertising multiple blood drives being held around the Manhattan area throughout the rest of the month to help address the need. Fort Riley will be honoring former Italian and German prisoners of war with a wreath-laying ceremony on Thursday at Fort Riley. Guest speakers for the morning will be Italian Army Major Stefano Catania and German Army Colonel Carsten Doding, both currently stationed at Fort Leavenworth. Fort Riley housed 4500 Italian and German POWs during World War II — one of 600 locations in the nations chosen to do so. The ceremony is an annual remembrance of those soldiers, most notably the 62 Germans and 11 Italians who were buried at Fort Riley. OLATHE — A judge has ordered a mental competency examination for a 19-year-old man charged with sexually assaulting a girl in a child welfare office. Michael Anthony Hamer is charged in Johnson County with rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. Prosecutors allege Hamer assaulted a 13-year-old girl in May while they were at a KVC Health Systems office in Olathe. They were both in the state foster care system at the time. KANSAS CITY, Kan — The owner of a suburban Kansas City restaurant was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison for falsely claiming he was paying his workers minimum wage. U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister announced Tuesday that 39-year-old Yong Lin, of Overland Park, was sentenced for falsifying records submitted to the U.S. Department of Labor. Lin owns the China Garden restaurant in Merriam. A federal investigation determined Lin was not complying with the Fair Labor Standards Act because he did not pay employees overtime after 40 hours. PRATT — Authorities say police have shot and wounded a man after he fired at an officer in southern Kansas. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says 38-year-old Rene Prieto, of Pratt, is in critical condition at a Wichita hospital. The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon in Pratt after police officers responded to a report of a man waving a gun on a street outside a home. The KBI says as officers approached Prieto, he fired at one of the officers. Three officers then returned fire and struck Prieto. The KBI says no officers were hurt. The latest updates on plans for two planned recreation centers and the future of City Park were presented at the Manhattan City Commission’s work session in City Hall Tuesday. City Park Master Plan The plan lays out the long-term vision for improvements and projects around the park. The last version of the plan was adopted in 2006, but city administration decided it needed updates as many projects within it have already been completed. K-State Police is advising students and faculty on campus about recent robo phone calls. According to a press release, on Sunday, November 11, K-State phone numbers started receiving robocalls with derogatory racially or ethnically based messages. Many of the calls were left on voicemail. K-State Police and Telecom have been made aware of the calls and have determined they originate from a number that cannot be traced. While Telecom is working to block the reported number, KSU PD are advising those receiving a call to hang up immediately and report it to K-State Police at police@k-state.edu or by calling 785-532-6412.
