OLATHE — A fifth lawsuit has been filed in Kansas against an opioid maker and a doctor accused in a prescription kickback scheme. The Kansas City Star reports that Timothy Farquhar filed the lawsuit last week in Johnson County against his former doctor, Steven Simon, and Insys Therapeutics. He alleges that Simon prescribed him unnecessarily high doses of opioids, including the fentanyl spray Subsys, for pain related to a spinal injury and cyanide poisoning. The Manhattan Veterans’ Day Parade organized by the Flint Hills Veterans Coalition was capped off by a ceremony in Peace Memorial Auditorium. Featuring musical performances and speeches by essay contest winners, the ceremony was closed by keynote speaker Jed Dunham from the K-State Office of Military and Veterans Affairs. SHAWNEE — Authorities are investigating a possible murder-suicide near a suburban Kansas City park. Police say in a Facebook post that two bodies were found Sunday near Riverfront Park in western Shawnee, Kansas. The discovery was made while officers were responding to a request from Kansas City, Missouri, police to check on the welfare of a person thought to be endangered. The names of the two people who were found dead weren’t immediately released. Their deaths are under investigation.
OVERLAND PARK — Authorities say a woman has died after she was pulled from a burning suburban Kansas City house fire. The Kansas City Star reports that 67-year-old Leanora Marks was rescued Sunday night from the basement of an Overland Park, Kansas, home. Fire officials said in a news release that she was rushed to a hospital, where she later died. Fire crews say it appears the fire started in the basement, but the majority of the damage was to the home’s upper level. WICHITA — Kansas Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts is working to get a farm bill approved to prove he’s still a viable candidate for 2020. The Wichita Eagle reports that the 82-year-old survived a primary challenge against a political newcomer in 2014 with less than 50 percent of vote. He then needed a flood of national money to win his general election campaign. The farm bill is crucial because it’s unlikely he’ll be able to avoid another primary challenge in 2020 if he runs. Manhattan, KAN. – The Sunflower Showdown was more like the Sunflower Armistice on Saturday in Manhattan. At least for the first half, when the second half hit, the fireworks began. K-State’s first and only look at scoring in the first half produced a missed field goal by Andrew Hicks. Kansas’ lone score came on a short field goal by Gabriel Ruiz. A portion of a road in Pottawatomie County southeast of Westmoreland is closed as a result of a bridge failure, according to the Northeast Kansas Regional Notification System. The bridge over Adams Creek on Pauling Run Road failed Thursday, closing the road at the bridge to the west of Adams Creek Road. Pauling Run Road is a small, largely unpaved road. Officials say traffic is limited to only local traffic between Wheaton Road and Adams Creek Road. The bridge over Adams Creek, constructed in 1930, is a concrete slab bridge that spans about 20 feet. A section of Ober Road northwest of Randolph will be closed to through traffic due to road work starting Tuesday, November 13. Riley County Public Works will be performing a bridge deck replacement project on a stretch of Ober that is three quarters of a mile south of Bodaville Road. As a result, Ober Road east from Droll Road and north to Bodaville Road will be closed. Officials project the project will be completed by November 30, barring any weather-related delays.
