WICHITA — An emergency dispatcher is winning praise for helping a caller deliver his daughter’s baby in rural central Kansas. Harvey County Communications said in a Facebook post that the baby arrived just before 3 a.m. Thursday in neighboring Butler County. Firefighters and paramedics showed up seven minutes later and took the baby to a Wichita hospital in good condition. The post says a “stork pin is on order” for the dispatcher. The post praised the grandfather for “calmly” following instruction. A follow-up post reported that the grandfather said it felt like the dispatcher “had done this many times before.”

LAWRENCE — The three suspects in a shooting that left three dead and two wounded in downtown Lawrence will have separate trials. The Lawrence Journal-World reports a mistrial was declared Thursday in a joint trial for the three suspects. Douglas County District Court Judge Sally Pokorny did not explain what caused the mistrial. On Friday, Pokorny ordered separate trials for 21-year-old Anthony Roberts Jr., 23-year-old Ahmad Rayton and 20-year-old Dominique McMillon. Residents of Junction City will be able to make payments online again. According to a release, the city’s online payment website is operational again and no longer have to be made in person. Utility bills and municipal court fines can be paid on the city’s payment portal.
Budget cuts and increased costs for student housing at Kansas State University may be on the horizon. Due to a decrease in tuition revenue and increases in payments to KPERS and insurance coverage, K-State is looking at millions in budget cuts and a rise in cost of housing at both dorms and campus apartments for the year 2019. Budget cuts KSU is looking at budget cuts of around $2.4 million for their 2019 budget due to lower than anticipated tuition revenue. Now that a number of construction projects at Fort Riley are wrapping up, the base is updating its access control point hours. The Trooper access control point is resuming 24/7 hours of operation while Grant access control point is shifting to limited hours. Grant access point will now be open from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday except on federal holidays. Additionally, there are three other 24/7 access control points. OLATHE — Court records say a man accused in a suburban Kansas City hit-and-run crash that left two people dead had been speeding and “jockeying back and forth” with one of the victim’s vehicles beforehand. The Kansas City Star reports that prosecutors released the affidavit Thursday in the case against 45-year-old Bradley Woodworth, of Olathe. He is charged with leaving the scene of the Oct. 6 wreck that killed 18-year-old Matthew Bloskey and 20-year-old Samuel Siebuhr. TOPEKA — Kansas’ new Democratic governor-elect says she will look to block enforcement of a new adoption law that she and LGBT-rights activists consider discriminatory. That would be a sharp break with the state’s two previous conservative Republican governors.
