The family of a worker who died over the summer while working at a Westar Plant near Topeka have filed a lawsuit in federal court. The suit was filed on behalf of the children of Damien Burchett of Manhattan. Burchett and co-worker Jesse Henson of Overbrook were killed at the plant on June 3rd when the elevator they were in filled with superheated steam. The two were investigating a loss of steam at a safety release valve. The valve is intended to vent steam outside should pressure rise too high. The latest tax collection report released by Gov. Jeff Colyer’s office shows that revenue exceeded expectations. Tax revenue for the month of October was up 2.14 percent from the previous year, an increase of $10.71 million. That exceeded the state’s expectations for the month by $6.99 million. Fiscal year 2019 tax revenue for the state totals $2.2 billion. That’s $105.6 million more than was estimated to be collected. That also exceeds fiscal year 2018 tax collections by more than $183 million. Individual income taxes brought in $242.29 million in the month of October, $12.88 million more than the previous fiscal…
The Senate Confirmation Oversight Committee approved Mark Hutton of Andover and Allen Schmidt of Hays to begin serving on the Board of Regents and confirmed Bill Feuerborn of Garnett for a second term. Hutton and Schmidt will fill the positions vacated by Joe Bain of Goodland and Zoe Newton of Sedan. Feuerborn has been serving on the Board of Regents since 2014. Hutton was the CEO of Hutton Construction Corporation in Wichita and has served as a state representative in the Kansas Legislature. ATCHISON — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting involving an Atchison police officer. The Atchison police department contacted the KBI Wednesday for assistance in an officer-involved shooting. The KBI reports preliminary information indicates that an Atchison officer was sent to a theft of services call at an Atchison home. When the officer arrived on scene, a man approached the officer while carrying a rifle. The KBI says the man, 44-year-old Bryan Boldridge, put down the rifle when ordered to by the officer. WICHITA — A Wichita man has been charged in a crash that killed an off-duty Wichita police officer and his son. Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. Tim Myers said in a news release that 35-year-old James Neal Dalrymple, of Valley Center, was charged Wednesday with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and failing to yield the right of way. The crash on April 27 killed 37-year-old Stacey Woodson, and his 9-year-old son, Braedon. Woodson was a 16-year Wichita police veteran who worked in the motorcycle unit.
