Kansas State women’s basketball will play for a national audience four times this season, according to the Big 12’s conference television schedule released on Monday. No injuries were reported after a brief electrical fire was reported Tuesday morning at the Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan, located at 5th and Pierre Street. The Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to the facility around 10:30 a.m. for a structure fire. Staff reportedly used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire in a bathroom. No children were in the facility at the time and all staff had evacuated prior to firefighters arriving on scene. The annual Fall Apple Day Festival, set for this weekend at Fort Riley, was canceled amid the federal government shutdown. Apple Day is a longstanding tradition for the soldiers and families of the Big Red One, or the 1st Infantry Division. A Topeka man was arrested Saturday night after deputies responded to a burglary in progress at a rural residence west of Alma, according to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were dispatched late in the evening on October 11 to the 34000 block of Old K-10 Road following a report of an unknown individual inside a home removing items. When deputies arrived, they found and detained the suspect, identified as 63-year-old Gary Purvis of Topeka. Kansas State basketball fans were in for a bit of surprise Monday afternoon when they looked at the preseason AP top 25 and saw the Wildcat listed. Five people were injured Monday morning in a four-car crash west of Lasita Road on U.S. Highway 24 in northern Riley County. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 8:30 a.m. when a Nissan Sentra driven by 20-year-old Ella Thalmann of Palmer rear-ended a Ford Focus stopped to turn left, driven by 61-year-old Brian Shane of Alta Vista. The impact pushed Thalmann’s car into a westbound Dodge Ram driven by 33-year-old Trevor Clark of Manhattan. Wabaunsee girls’ tennis dominated the field over the weekend, winning their first regional in school history, finished first and second in doubles and third and sixth in singles on Saturday at Cair Paravel Latin School in Topeka. The Chargers finished with 20 team points, 11 more than second place Cair Paravel. Marantha Christian Academy took third.
