KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The final images of the Kansas City Chiefs’ postseason pursuit were Patrick Mahomes getting helped to the locker room with what turned out to be a torn ACL in his left knee, a white towel draped over his head, and backup quarterback Gardner Minshew throwing an interception to Derwin James that gave the Los Angeles Chargers a win over one of their biggest rivals. It all happened in the final two minutes of their 16-13 victory Sunday. Justin Herbert, playing through a broken left hand, had helped the Chargers take the lead with a second-half…
Toby Hammes sports@themercury.com Kansas State men’s basketball turned a tale of two halves into a needed road win Saturday, surviving a Creighton rally to escape Omaha with an 83–76 victory. The Wildcats (7–4) looked every bit like their early-season self in the first half, but the second half tested whether K-State had learned how to win away from home. “In the second half, Creighton did a great job and really got after us,” head coach Jerome Tang said. “We didn’t play as well as we did in the first half — that’s why you play two halves.” Behind a steady…

She would be only days removed from unpacking boxes when she showed up at Warner Park for her first summer workout with the Indians. Within minutes, the coaches noticed. The new girl in town, running unfamiliar trails with unfamiliar faces, was suddenly holding pace with Manhattan’s top group. A mile and a half uphill, in Kansas heat, on her very first days. By Toby Hammes Before he became the most dynamic athlete in Manhattan High’s football history, before the title-game heroics, before the Miami pledge and the All-State recognition, JJ Dunnigan was simply a kid recovering from foot surgery, wondering where football would take him. Two years later, it has taken him everywhere. The senior wide receiver and defensive back powered Manhattan to a state championship, delivered the most dominant postseason stretch of his career and cemented himself as the most naturally gifted player head coach Joe Schartz has ever coached.
