WICHITA — Police say child welfare authorities had received abuse reports about a Wichita couple whose 3-year-old had been dead for days when his body was found in a crib in their mobile home. Capt. Brent Allred says an autopsy will determine the cause of death for Zaiden Javonovich, whose parents were booked into jail last week on suspicion of murder. Police also say a 4-month-old boy who was taken from their home Thursday in critical condition is improving. Kansas farmers will soon be able to add hemp to the list of crops they can market commercially. Gov. Laura Kelly signed a bill establishing the commercial industrial hemp program Monday, April 15. It’s a step toward the state creating its own regulations and opening up commercial hemp cultivation in Kansas — legalized fully under the 2018 Farm Bill. Under the new law, Kansas Department of Agriculture will coordinate with the governor and attorney general to outline its plan to regulate the product to the United States Department of Agriculture. INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis-based company has issued a recall for melon products sold in 16 states after being linked to a salmonella outbreak. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Friday that the recall includes cut watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe produced by Caito Foods LLC. The fruit has been sold under various brands or labels at Kroger, Walmart, Trader Joe’s, Target and Whole Foods. TOPEKA — Child welfare advocates in Kansas are frustrated with what they see as the Legislature’s lack of action on recommendations for fixing problems in the state’s troubled foster care system. Gov. Laura Kelly says she understands their frustrations but argues that her administration and lawmakers are making progress. She also says it will take time to fix long-term problems. Funeral arrangements are set for the former Director of the Flint Hills Breadbasket in Manhattan. Shirley Bramhall will be laid to rest Thursday in Vermillion, Kan. Services will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Vermillion School with pastor Tom Walters officiating. Interment will follow in the Vermillion Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
