By Emma Loura Kansas-born author and K-State graduate Tammi Sauer returned to her old stomping grounds Wednesday, teaching the 2nd and 3rd graders of Amanda Arnold Elementary about effective story-telling. Sauer, who has written and published 37 children’s books, says she combines heart and humor to her writing. “It’s just such a strange and wonderful feeling to come back,” Sauer said. “It’s just amazing, it felt like coming home.” Sauer used to work at Amanda Arnold Elementary 30 years ago, when she was pursuing a career in teaching. Kansas State football got its first player picked in the 2025 NFL Draft Friday evening as junior cornerback Jacob Parrish heard his name called in the third round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. K-State has now had five players selected in the top three rounds over the last three years, its most in a three-year stretch since 2001-03. Parrish, who was chosen with the 84th overall pick, came to Manhattan as a late addition to the 2022 class out of Olathe North High School. By Rose Gruenbacher Riley County Police Department this week proposed a $30.85 million budget for 2026, which would be a 7.28% increase from 2025. However police board members unanimously rejected the proposal, and chairman John Matta said the increase was twice as high as he wanted it to be. Director Brian Peete said the proposed number, presented Monday, includes cost-of-living raises, a new corrections sergeant, security camera equipment and money for contractual services such as help during community parades and races. A Manhattan man was taken into custody last week after reportedly violating multiple court-ordered no-contact orders. According to the Riley County Police Department, officers filed a report of stalking and violation of a court order in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road on April 24, 2025. A 28-year-old woman was listed as the victim in the case. Investigators determined that 29-year-old Sherman Sherin II violated two separate protection orders on three occasions between April 22 and April 25. A Manhattan man was arrested Thursday morning on multiple outstanding warrants and new drug-related charges. According to the Riley County Police Department, an officer made contact with 54-year-old John Swartz in the 3000 block of Conrow Drive on April 24 at approximately 10:34 a.m. During the encounter, Swartz was arrested for three failure to appear warrants issued by the Riley County District Court. The original charges tied to those warrants include battery, two counts of interference with law enforcement, and a third-offense possession of marijuana.
