WICHITA — The family of a Kansas sheriff’s deputy who was killed in the line of duty will get $300,000 in a worker’s compensation settlement over his death in September. The Wichita Eagle reports that the Sedgwick County Commission approved settlement payouts to Deputy Robert Kunze’s widow and young daughter on Wednesday. Kunze was fatally shot on Sept. 16 when attempting to handcuff a man on suspicion of vehicle theft about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of downtown Wichita. A multi-vehicle accident in Manhattan led to the hospitalization of three individuals and required first responders to extricate an occupant of one vehicle Wednesday afternoon. The two cars collided near the intersection of Fort Riley Boulevard and Delaware Avenue just before 5 p.m. According to police, 37-year-old Alexis Collier and 41-year-old Morgan Jarmin were occupying an 01 Toyota Camry when they collided with 27-year-old Manuel Flores’ 15 GMC Terrain. The City of Manhattan received a $150,000 donation from the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation at the City Commission’s Tuesday meeting. Foundation President Bruce Snead presented the cheque. Snead says the donation is the final payment of a gift from Marty Vanier and Bob Krause to go toward bond payments on the facility and help pay them off early. Snead also recognized the city’s support for the Center and commended all those who were instrumental toward Downtown Redevelopment. “Without the vision, planning, fiscal structuring, investments, decisions and perseverance of many people this would not have happened,” says Snead. Manhattan High School Assistant Principal Michael Dorst will be taking over as the new MHS principal later this year. The announcement came from USD 383 Superintendent Marvin Wade during last night’s board of education meeting.  Dorst was chosen from a pool of five candidates. Dorst says he was drawn to the position since he has been at MHS for 11 years and has worked closely with current MHS Principal Greg Hoyt.   He wants to use the skills and abilities he has grown to make an impact at the school in a big way. “This whole experience has been both humbling…

New small cell 5g mobile network towers will have to follow some design guidelines when they begin increasingly popping up around Manhattan. The City Commission unanimously approved aesthetic standards and a placement prioritization for the towers in public right of ways Tuesday. 5g networks will deliver users much higher rates of data to their devices with an incredibly speedy connection. The network is touted as being necessary for things like autonomous vehicles to function. 5g networks will require smaller towers to be spread around cities more frequently than current network generations, possibly every city block. The City of Manhattan took the first steps toward a $4.9 million expansion of the Manhattan Regional Airport parking lot. The City Commission unanimously approved authorizing administration to request bids at its Tuesday meeting. Parking expansion has been in the city’s plans for years, which Airport Director Jesse Romo says is warranted. He says they exceeded their current capacity of more than 700 spots this past Christmas with enplanements increasing yearly. A man was taken to Riley County Jail after being tased while running from police Wednesday, according to the Riley County Police Department. The incident occurred in the 9 o’clock hour on the 1400 block of Flint Hills Place. Police were responding to a domestic incident call that came in just before 9 a.m. Due to the nature of the crime, police officials say they cannot release any further details.
