TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Abortion providers sued Kansas on Tuesday over a law enacted this year and existing restrictions, including a decades-old requirement that patients wait 24 hours after first seeing a provider to terminate their pregnancies. Besides the waiting period, the lawsuit challenges a law set to take effect July 1 that will require providers to tell patients that a medication abortion can be stopped using a regimen that major medical groups have called unproven and potentially dangerous. According to a Monday release, a total of seven contestants have advanced to this year’s finals. Betty Burlingham, Manhattan; John Marks, Gypsum; Mary Powell, Longton; Colby Richard, Ellsworth; Kasey Rieff, Sarcoxie, MO; and Scott Wiswell, Valley Center have entries in the serious poem category. Vandals have struck again out at Anneberg Park. The Riley County Police Department says officers filed a criminal damage to property report Monday after the City of Manhattan reported damage to the soccer building complex, including a door, as well as locks and knobs on three doors to the building. Damage was estimated at just under $1,200. It’s the third report of vandalism at Anneberg Park since mid-April. Anyone with information is asked to call RCPD or Crime Stoppers.

The Riley County Board of Commissioners approved a request Monday to administer two surveys to collect staff and public feedback on a proposed schedule of four, ten-hour days per workweek for all departments. Riley County Clerk Rich Vargo presented the survey request to commissioners and emphasized that the benefits of this change extend beyond an additional day off for employees. He said this new schedule would offer the same, if not better, level of services at no extra cost to taxpayers. A bench warrant has been issued for a Fort Riley soldier accused in a 2018 rape. Luis Emanuel Cortijo-Abreu was initially charged in July 2019 with the rape of a mentally deficient victim. In court Monday, it was discussed by attorney Brenda Jordan that she has not had contact with Abreu for an extended period of time, noting that online court records show nothing has happened with his case since a March 2020 arraignment hearing.
