Manhattan High School Assistant Principal Michael Dorst will be taking over as the new MHS principal later this year. The announcement came from USD 383 Superintendent Marvin Wade during last night’s board of education meeting.  Dorst was chosen from a pool of five candidates. New small cell 5g mobile network towers will have to follow some design guidelines when they begin increasingly popping up around Manhattan. The City Commission unanimously approved aesthetic standards and a placement prioritization for the towers in public right of ways Tuesday. 5g networks will deliver users much higher rates of data to their devices with an incredibly speedy connection. The network is touted as being necessary for things like autonomous vehicles to function. 5g networks will require smaller towers to be spread around cities more frequently than current network generations, possibly every city block. The City of Manhattan took the first steps toward a $4.9 million expansion of the Manhattan Regional Airport parking lot. The City Commission unanimously approved authorizing administration to request bids at its Tuesday meeting. Parking expansion has been in the city’s plans for years, which Airport Director Jesse Romo says is warranted. He says they exceeded their current capacity of more than 700 spots this past Christmas with enplanements increasing yearly. A man was taken to Riley County Jail after being tased while running from police Wednesday, according to the Riley County Police Department. The incident occurred in the 9 o’clock hour on the 1400 block of Flint Hills Place. Police were responding to a domestic incident call that came in just before 9 a.m. Due to the nature of the crime, police officials say they cannot release any further details.

Update:  Sharlet Hubner has been found and is back home. Original: Riley County Police are asking for help locating a girl who was last seen Monday, March 18. Officials say 17-year-old Sharlet Ann Hubner was last seen shortly after 5 p.m. that afternoon. Hubner is described as having brown hair and blue eyes, standing about 5 feet and 8 inches tall and weighing about 150 pounds. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call Detective Sam Shubert at 785-473-2512.

TOPEKA — Authorities say a former president of a credit union in Topeka has pleaded guilty to embezzlement. The U.S. attorney’s office said in a news release that 52-year-old Connie Marie Kent of Topeka pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of theft from a credit union and has agreed to repay nearly $40,000. She admitted in her plea agreement that she was an officer and employee of 1st Kansas Credit Union, formerly known as Post Office Credit Union. Its membership is limited to government employees. She faces up to 30 years in prison. Sentencing is set for June 25.

A Manhattan bank and construction company were the victims of theft and fraud Tuesday, according to Riley County Police. RCPD says a known suspect stole Kansas State Banks cheques from Walters Morgan Construction and made false information. The loss associated with the case is $8,001. An unknown suspect stole a donated trailer from Habitat for Humanity, according to Riley County Police. The trailer was taken from the ReStore parking lot. RCPD received the theft report just after noon on Monday, but Manhattan Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Karmen Davenport says they don’t know when the theft actually occurred. “The trailer was there in our parking lot Saturday when we closed at 5 p.m. and we realized Monday morning that it was no longer there,” Davenport says. “It disappeared sometime over the weekend.” The trailer is worth about $1,000.
