A CivicPlus Account Manager who has lived in Manhattan for seven years has filed for the Manhattan City Commission election. Jerred McKee has announced his candidacy for City Commission. McKee also ran for city commission in 2015. “I love this city and it would be an honor to serve on the Commission,” McKee said. “The fact of the matter is that we need to prepare Manhattan for the economy of tomorrow. Manhattan Regional Airport welcomed the arrival of new aircraft Friday morning. The plane, a Bombardier CRJ700, seats 65 people and will be used in the airport’s daily flights to and from Dallas. It was welcomed with a ceremonious water cannon salute. It’s the biggest plane to be in service for the airport, which has tripled in size over the past five years. The $15.8 million expansion of the airport was paid for through grants from the Federal Aviation Administration and City of Manhattan funding. TOPEKA — Kansas legislators have advanced a proposal to keep concealed guns out of hospitals, mental health centers and nursing homes after June. The Senate Ways and Means Committee approved a bill Thursday that would give the facilities a permanent exemption from a 2013 gun-rights law. That law said people must be allowed to bring concealed guns into public buildings that don’t have extra security including guards and metal detectors. Universities, state and public hospitals, mental health centers and nursing homes received a four-year exemption expiring July 1. WAKEENEY — A western Kansas police chief who’s charged with blackmail, witness intimidation and several other charges has been returned to jail after being accused of violating his bond conditions. Trego County Attorney Christopher Lyon says a bond violation hearing is scheduled for Monday for WaKeeney Police Chief Terry Eberle. He was returned to jail Thursday, just one day after he was arrested and then released on his own recognizance. Eberle also faces charges of phone harassment, tampering, attempted interference with law enforcement and theft. The German short-haired pointer dog Buck will remain in the care of the T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter as the investigation continues of the dog biting a two-year old twice within a two-day period of adoption in late April. Buck was adopted on April 24 and returned to the Shelter on April 25. The family surrendered the dog back to the T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter after reporting Buck had bit their 2-year daughter twice within the two-day period of adoption. Buck’s rabies status was unknown, requiring a 10-day observation following the reported bites. This observation period has ended today,…
Kansas State University officials are announcing the University Office of Institutional Equity Friday received notification of a noose hanging from a tree on the Manhattan campus.
