A bridge about 1 mile east of Tuttle Creek Boulevard in Northern Riley County is closed indefinitely, according to a release from Riley County Public Works. The Stockdale Park Road bridge over Mill Creek — located in Grant Township — has sustained critical concrete section loss in its deck. Photos released by the department show that enough concrete has been lost that re-bar is showing in some sections. Officials recommend any motorists use alternate routes.

TOPEKA — Kansas has a 100 percent annual turnover rate among entry-level equipment operators on highway maintenance crews. Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly has pointed to Department of Transportation staffing woes as a prime example of where she found worse-than-expected problems before she took office last month. But some Republican legislators are skeptical that KDOT faces a crisis. They believe Kelly is overstating state government’s problems to push the GOP-controlled Legislature into higher spending. Regulations for the Kansas Industrial Hemp Research Program went into effect Friday, Feb. 8, and the Kansas Department of Agriculture is now taking license applications for the program. Originally made possible by the 2014 Farm Bill, which included a provision allowing universities and state departments of agriculture to cultivate hemp — varieties of the plant cannabis sativa L that contain a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration of no more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis — for research purposes if legal under state law. WAMEGO – The Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program recently held its 2019 graduation. The 30 members of the 2018-19 class graduated on Friday, Feb. 8 during ceremonies at the Columbian Theater in Wamego, according to Jack Lindquist, Executive Director of the organization. The President of the United States and his counterparts from continental neighbors signed a trade deal to replace the North American Free Trade Act back in November. The provisions included in it would require that 75 percent of an automobile’s parts be made in North America to avoid customs charges, up from 62.5 percent, as well as that at least 40 percent of automobile content be made by workers who make more than $16 per hour. JUNCTION CITY — Geary County Sheriff Tony Wolf entered a plea of not guilty to a felony theft charge as well as a misdemeanor during an arraignment hearing Friday morning. According to the Dickinson County Attorney’s office, who is prosecuting Wolf in this matter, a jury trial date has been set for May 8-9 in Geary County District Court. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for March 29. Sheriff Wolf was arrested by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation in October for a misuse of public funds, a misdemeanor, and felony theft for gifting a department-owned firearm to a third party. LARNED — Twenty inmates at the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility face felony charges after a riot at the prison in November. Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett charged the inmates after a state prison official completed an investigation of the Nov. 6 uprising. McNett said in a news release Wednesday the 20 inmates were primarily responsible for the riots. He says he saw no evidence that inmates breached individual housing units in the prison’s Central Unit, and his office is treating the case as four self-contained riots occurring at the same time.
