A U.S. District Court Judge, Tuesday, denied K-State’s motion to dismiss Title IX violations cited in two ongoing federal lawsuits against the university. The suits were filed in April by former KSU students Sara Weckhorst and Tessa Farmer. Both accused that K-State failed to diligently address their claims of sexual assault and rape by male fraternity members who also attended the university. Since the beginning and in court documents, K-State has asserted off-campus rapes or sexual assaults wouldn’t be investigated by the university, citing its lack of jurisdiction. Riley County officers filed a report for theft by deception in the 1100 block of Westloop Pl. yesterday at approximately 11:15 AM. Officers listed Daniel Ashmore, 46, of Manhattan, as the victim when he sent an unknown suspect approximately $780.00 for car parts, but never received the parts. Police ask that anyone with information contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. PITTSBURG — Pittsburg residents have approved a $31 million bond issue that will be used to expand the district’s six schools. Unofficial results show the bond issued passed Tuesday in a special election by a 1,542-641 margin. The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports funds from the bond will be used for projects such as heating and air conditioning and renovating the cafeteria and band rooms at Pittsburg High School. Several science classrooms at the high school will be upgraded. Other projects include adding rooms at elementary schools and expanding the gymnasium at the middle school. TOPEKA — The Kansas House unanimously passed a sales tax exemption for supplies and services to repair or construct fencing for agricultural land. The bill passed Tuesday by the House is in response to fires that burned hundreds of thousands of acres in Kansas last week. The fires destroyed miles of fencing on ranches and farms, mostly in Comanche and Clark counties. The Wichita Eagle reports the legislation exempts from sales tax goods and services purchased to help repair or rebuild fencing. The House gave the bill early and final approval Tuesday. TOPEKA  — A Kansas legislator is standing by a comment he made in a letter comparing Planned Parenthood with a Nazi concentration camp. Republican state Sen. Steve Fitzgerald of Leavenworth told The Kansas City Star on Monday that he considers Planned Parenthood worse than the Nazi regime in Germany. LAWRENCE — Kansas congresswoman Lynn Jenkins has been booed and faced shouts of “Do Your Job!” as she defends a Republican plan for overhauling health care. The five-term Republican congresswoman had a raucous town hall meeting Monday in Lawrence reminiscent of recent events in which GOP lawmakers in other states have been booed and jeered.
