Manhattan City administrators and elected officials met with state representatives from the local area on Wednesday to discuss the city’s legislative priorities for the 2019 legislative session. Mayor Mike Dodson and City Manager Ron Fehr along with other officials met with Representatives Sydney Carlin, Susie Swanson and Senator Tom Hawk in City Hall. Agricultural workers from around the state of Kansas gathered at the Kansas Department of Agriculture for a public hearing for the proposed industrial hemp regulations. KDA Hearing Officer Kelly Navinsky-Wenzl started the meeting with summing up the proposed regulations for the Industrial Hemp Research Program. She then opened the floor up to the public to make any comments on the regulations they had issues with. Transient Guest Tax The tax that visitors to Manhattan pay for a hotel room is set to rise by half a percent. The Manhattan City Commission unanimously voted to raise the city’s transient guest tax from 7 to 7 point 5 percent at their meeting Tuesday. The city has been looking into an expansion of the Manhattan Conference Center at the Hilton Garden Inn that is now estimated will cost $3.5 million. MANHATTAN — A Maryland-based solar contractor is facing nearly $40,000 in fines after an employee died from electrocution at Fort Riley. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Wednesday it cited Power Factor LLC for four serious violations after the employee died in July while installing solar panels at the fort. The agency says the employee was hoisting a metal rail that came into contact with overhead power lines. OSHA cited the company for exposing workers to electrical hazards, including live and uninsulated power circuits. TOPEKA — Kansas Gov.-elect Laura Kelly has picked a federal prosecutor to serve as her office’s top attorney and filled other key staff positions. The incoming Democratic governor announced Tuesday that Clay Britton will be her chief counsel. He has worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in Kansas since October 2016 and previously was an assistant Kansas attorney general and attorney in private practice.
