KANSAS CITY — NASA is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a woman over a vial of moon dust that is being kept in a secret location in Kansas. Laura Cicco, of Tennessee, filed a lawsuit in June in Kansas asking a federal court to affirm that she owns the lunar dust she says she was given by astronaut Neil Armstrong, who was a friend of her father’s. TOPEKA — Republican Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is disputing a new television ad in which his Democratic rival in the governor’s race says he’s called the state’s school overfunded. The Kansas City Star reports that Kobach says Sen. Laura Kelly should change or take down the ad, which began airing Thursday. In the ad, Kelly says Kobach “actually says our schools are overfunded,” citing his comments at a Republican primary debate in April in Atchison. The City of Manhattan has come out with estimates of the damage caused by the Labor Day Wildcat Creek flood — and the cost is in the millions. Manhattan City Manager Ron Fehr was on Tuesday’s edition of KMAN’s In Focus and said the flash flooding caused $17.2 million in damage. He broke that down into private and public real estate damage — $14.5 million of which was sustained by private structures while $2.7 million was sustained by city property. WICHITA — A driver has been charged with running into a Kansas sheriff’s deputy while intoxicated and breaking the deputy’s leg. Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. Tim Myers said in a release that the driver was charged Tuesday with two counts of aggravated battery while driving under the influence in the April 28 crash in east Wichita. His name won’t be released until he makes a first appearance. The Wichita Eagle reports that an arrest warrant is pending. HOLTON — Authorities say a Kansas man has been charged with fatally shooting his father while he was in bed and then barricading himself in the home for hours. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that 49-year-old Derrick Bohnenkemper, of Holton, is charged with first-degree murder and six other felonies in the death of 73-year-old Gaylen Bohnenkemper. Police responded Tuesday after a 911 caller said her son had shot his father in the head.
