KANSAS CITY — A man who was deported to Mexico four times and has a history of criminal convictions has been sentenced to nearly seven years in federal prison. Jorge Carrillo-Hernandez was sentenced Monday in federal court in Kansas to four years and nine months for unlawfully returning to the U.S. A federal judge added two years to that sentence because he returned while under probation for one of his criminal convictions. WICHITA — Authorities say a driver struck and seriously injured a 14-year-old boy as he was riding a bicycle in southeast Wichita. Police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow says the boy was struck Tuesday afternoon as he entered a busy road, apparently from a side street. The Wichita Eagle reports that the boy was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. His injuries don’t appear life threatening. The driver who struck the cyclist is cooperating with the investigation.

TOPEKA — A Minnesota man arrested in central Kansas with 471 pounds of marijuana in his van has pleaded guilty to a drug charge. Federal prosecutors say 41-year-old Mark Berg, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, entered the plea Tuesday to one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper stopped Berg’s van in December on Interstate 70 in Ellsworth, Kansas. Two other vehicles were traveling with the van. GALESBURG — Authorities say a farmer has found human remains while mowing a field in southeast Kansas. Kansas Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nichole Hamm said in a news release that the remains haven’t been identified. They were found Monday morning in Neosho County and have been taken to the Shawnee County Coroner’s office for examination. The KBI says the investigation is being treated as a suspicious death.

SEWARD — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a shooting death in a small central Kansas town. The KBI says the sheriff’s office received a call Tuesday morning about a shooting in Seward. Authorities found the body of 35-year-old Adrianne Martin at the home. She died of gunshot wounds. Authorities say a male acquaintance of the woman was at the home suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound. No further information was released. Seward is a town of about 60 residents about 65 miles (104.6 kilometers) west of Hutchinson.

TOPEKA — Kansas lawmakers are recommending a review of the state’s privatized child welfare model to decide whether it’s in the state’s best interest. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the Child Welfare System Task Force received the request Monday from two working groups it created to examine the system of programs operated within the Kansas Department for Children and Families. The 1996 privatized model involves the department contracting with outside nonprofits to manage placing children into homes. A Manhattan man was handed a long sentence Monday for multiple offenses including the murder of another Manhattan man last year. Steven Harris was sentenced to 58 years and two months in prison by the Riley County District Court for the May 2017 shooting death of 39-year-old German Gonzalez-Garcia and the shooting of Adrian Ortega. Ortega survived the shooting, which occurred in the 2800 block of Nelson’s Landing subdivision off Marlatt Avenue.
