A three vehicle accident near Highway 24 claimed the life of a Tennessee woman early Wednesday morning. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2006 Pontiac Montana driven by Audrey Kalivoda, 62, of Fairview, Tennessee, was southbound on Frontier Road when it failed to stop at the Highway 24 intersection. The Montana struck a 1999 Kenworth Semi which was eastbound on Highway 24. The semi, driven by Michael Broeckelman, 50, of Beloit, was then pushed into a 2013 Chevy Malibu driven by Lane Koster, 24, of Jewell. WICHITA — Police say a Wichita police officer is in critical but stable condition the day after being run over by a fleeing suspect. Deputy Chief Troy Livingston said Wednesday the officer is doing a lot better, adding he has “a lot of injuries to overcome.” Livingston says “we were afraid we were going to lose him.” The officer underwent surgery Tuesday and remains hospitalized. The injured officer, a 25-year veteran of the police force, was struck Tuesday while monitoring a house in south Wichita where a stolen vehicle and suspect were seen. PITTSBURG — Authorities are investigating a Kansas restaurant robbery that netted $2. The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports that two men are accused of forcing three Jimmy John’s employees to the floor Monday night. Night manager Seth Cheney says that after he told the masked suspects he couldn’t open the safe or register, they demanded cash from the Pittsburg sandwich shop’s employees. Cheney says two of them had empty wallets and a third had $3. The suspects also are accused of demanding a sandwich and fleeing as the food was being prepared. Officers filed a report for a motor vehicle theft in the 2400 block of Woodway Dr. on February 7, 2017 at approximately 5:00 PM. Officers listed Zachary Porter, 28, of Manhattan, as the victim when Joyce Porter, Zachary’s wife, reported his 2015 Scion FRS had been taken sometime between 9:00 PM on February 6, 2017 and 3:40 PM on February 7, 2017. With the construction of a new Genesis Health Club coming to Manhattan, the company’s CEO and attorney were both present at Tuesday’s City Commission meeting asking for a sales tax exemption on $6 million of material costs. Attorney at Law Korb Maxwell led commissioners in the discussion. Total costs for the new health club are estimated at $12 million. Maxwell says the new facility will be approximately twice the size of the current one on the west end of Manhattan on Anderson Avenue. According to a recent press release from Via Christi Heath, Via Christi in Manhattan and Wamego Health Center provided more than four million dollars in community benefit in fiscal year 2016. The company’s total community benefit was nearly $78 million across its nine Kansas hospitals.  Manhattan and Wamego combined donated nearly one million dollars in charity care and nearly three million dollars in unpaid costs of Medicaid services. Some other examples of local charity from the hospitals include the Flint Hills Community Clinic and Manhattan’s free weekly car seat checks.

TOPEKA — A civil rights advisory panel says a Kansas law requiring people to show photo ID at the polls and provide proof-of-citizenship documents to register to vote may discriminate against minorities. It also urges the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division to investigate whether the Kansas law violates federal voting laws. The Kansas City Star first reported on the draft report from the Kansas Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission of Civil Rights. TOPEKA — Kansas legislative committees are preparing to debate raising income taxes and other budget-balancing moves. The Senate Assessment and Taxation Committee expected to vote Tuesday on a plan from the chamber’s GOP leaders for boosting personal income taxes. The bill would eliminate an income tax exemption for more than 330,000 farmers and business owners and increase rates for all income taxpayers to raise $660 million over two years. The Senate Ways and Means Committee planned to discuss spending issues. It was reviewing accounting moves and other steps proposed by Brownback that include scaling back state contributions to public employee pensions.…
