A Manhattan man was handed a long sentence Monday for multiple offenses including the murder of another Manhattan man last year.
Steven Harris was sentenced to 58 years and two months in prison by the Riley County District Court for the May 2017 shooting death of 39-year-old German Gonzalez-Garcia and the shooting of Adrian Ortega. Ortega survived the shooting, which occurred in the 2800 block of Nelson’s Landing subdivision off Marlatt Avenue.
Harris fled the scene before being found and arrested by Wichita police alongside his fiance Cora Brown at a Wichita Motel 6. Brown was arrested on drug charges for possession of methamphetamine. Harris had previously served a 14-year sentence for second degree murder for a shooting inside a bar in Ottawa, Kansas in Franklin County that occurred on Dec. 2, 2000. He pleaded no contest to those charges.
Harris was convicted of second degree murder, attempted second degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm back in July. He was originally charged last year with first degree murder and attempted first degree murder in the case.
