KANSAS CITY, Kan. —  Authorities are searching for a suspect in a deadly December shooting in Kansas City, Kan. The Wyandotte County district attorney’s office has issued a first-degree murder warrant for 24-year-old Tyrone Hamilton. The Kansas City Star reports that he is accused of killing Mario Sanders on Dec. 24. Hamilton also is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. Police said in a news release that Hamilton should be considered armed and dangerous.

OLATHE —  An Olathe firefighter has filed a federal lawsuit alleging that she has been the victim of years of sexual harassment and discrimination. The Kansas City Star reports that Elizabeth Hinton filed lawsuit against the city in U.S. District Court in Kansas City. She says she was the city’s only woman firefighter for years after she was hired in 2006, and that the harassment got worse after she became pregnant. Hinton filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission last May. She alleges she was retaliated against as a result, including being given an unfavorable review for the…

Officers responded to an injury accident that occurred in the 2200 block of Marlatt Ave. on January 5, 2017 at approximately 3:40 PM. Stan Wilson, 64, of Manhattan, was driving a black Toyota passenger car which struck a black Jeep SUV from behind. The Jeep was driven by Kelly Gay, 36, of Manhattan. Wilson was transported to Via Christi by EMS for treatment. Wilson was issued a citation for following too closely.

A Topeka man was injured in a two vehicle accident that blocked westbound I-70 in Riley County for a couple of hours early Thursday afternoon.  Maxwell Kenneth Kelly, 28, was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka following the accident, reported at 11:18 Thursday morning at mile marker 320, five miles east of K-177. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Kelly was travelling westbound in the left lane and struck a dump truck with a plow blade that was blading snow south into the median with its emergency lights activated. TOPEKA — A group representing electronic cigarette retailers in Kansas is fighting to prevent the state from enforcing a new tax on vaping fluid. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that a lobbyist for the Kansas Vapers Association argued during a legislative committee meeting Tuesday that the bill imposing the new tax on e-cigarettes was drafted poorly and made the original intent unclear. The association told the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and Regulations that legislators should revisit the law before allowing the Kansas Department of Revenue to enforce the tax. Riley County Police responded to a single vehicle accident with injuries in the 6400 block of Fort Riley Blvd today at approximately 4:40 AM. Officers found that Erika Benko, 23, of New Cambria, lost control of her silver Toyota passenger car when she slid off the road. Benko was transported to Via Christi by EMS for treatment. WICHITA — The government’s January crops snapshot says most of Kansas has remained dry this past month, prompting some concerns about development of the state’s winter wheat. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Tuesday that wheat condition is rated as 5 percent very poor and 14 percent poor. About 37 percent is in fair condition with 42 percent in good and 2 percent in excellent shape. About 92 percent of the cotton crop has now been harvested in the state. Calving is also underway in Kansas with 7 percent complete. Lambing progress is 3 percent complete.

City commissioners met with only 1 item on the General Agenda but found themselves debating other issues and concerns. Commissioner Wynn Butler first expressed concern over the funding of two items on the Consent Agenda.
