DERBY, Kan. (AP) A 17-year-old transgender student who advocated for LGBTQ rights at a suburban Wichita high school was crowned king of a winter formal at the school. The Wichita Eagle reports Tyler Krayer received the most votes from classmates for Holly Ball King at the school’s annual event Saturday night. Krayer, a senior, says he at first thought it was a joke when he found out a month ago that a classmate nominated him. And he says he was surprised to win the honor. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) A Reno County judge has temporarily blocked a South Hutchinson business from reselling a pair of machines that purport to assist in body healing amid an ongoing legal dispute. The Hutchinson News reports that the temporary restraining order issued last week also prohibits Greg Dovel and his company, Energy Genesis of Kansas, from revealing confidential information about the machines. The order comes in a lawsuit filed by Beaver Creek LLC, which says it sold the machines to Dovel for $40,000 each. A 72-year-old Kansas Department of Corrections inmate serving time on Riley County rape and aggravated kidnapping convictions is up for public comment sessions and possible parole. Nordell Glover was sentenced in connection with the 1986 case the next year. Public comment sessions are set for February 15th in Derby, February 24th in topeka, and the 27th in Kansas City. Letters may also be sent to the Prisoner Review Board with the KDOC in Topeka. The parole hearing for Glover will be held in March with the earliest possible release date in April.
The Kansas Department of Agriculture will lead an emergency preparedness exercise, Afterburn, Dec. 19–22, in Manhattan to practice the state’s response plan to a foreign animal disease event. The four-day functional exercise, which will be based out of KDA headquarters in Manhattan, Kan., will enable KDA and its partners in other state agencies, federal and local government, industry, university and six other states to practice the state’s foreign animal disease response plan. A February 14th jury trial has been set for a Manhattan man facing three counts of aggravated criminal sodomy.Jase Stanton’s case continues to get delayed, with the original case occurring in June of 2015–and trial rescheduled at least a couple of times. Junction City Police are investigating two separate deaths the past few days within a block of each other. Early Tuesday morning Officers responded to the 500 block of West Spruce Street in reference to an injured subject. Upon arrival shortly before 12:30 a.m., officers located a 22-year-old male subject with critical injuries. The subject was transported to Geary Community Hospital where he later died. An autopsy has been scheduled and the case is under investigation. At this time no foul play is suspected. A fire in Manhattan Monday afternoon resulted in about $75,000 in damage to a two-story structure. At 2:45 p.m., the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to the blaze at 422 Vattier and upon arrival crews found a two-story residential structure with smoke and fire showing. Crews entered the structure and quickly extinguished the fire. The fire reached a second alarm before it was contained within 30 minutes with a total of 21 firefighters responding on 6 fire apparatus. The building was divided into two apartments with neither occupant being home at the time of the fire. Both occupants are displaced at this time…
