KANSAS CITY, Kan. –The designer of a waterslide where a 10-year-old Kansas boy was decapitated bonded out of the Kansas jail where he had been held for nearly a week. Court records show John Schooley bonded out of the Wyandotte County jail Wednesday afternoon. He was being held on $500,000 bond since he was extradited from Texas to Kansas on April 6. Schooley is charged with second-degree murder in the 2016 death of Caleb Schwab, who was killed while riding a 17-story waterslide Schooley helped to design. Schooley pleaded not guilty Monday. Beginning this weekend, phones will be ringing across the Manhattan-Ogden School District, as a comprehensive survey of patron opinion will begin. According to a press release from the district Friday, USD 383 officials said the survey of 400 households will provide insight into what residents think about the district’s strengths, challenges, and priorities. The survey, which the district says will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes, will touch on a wide variety of topics, and will include “pick one”-type questions, along with opportunities for residents to share their comments. “This survey will give us an outstanding opportunity to hear from…

SALINA — A Junction City woman whose boyfriend died of a drug overdose has been sentenced for drug distribution. The Salina Journal reports 27-year-old Racheal Moody was sentenced Monday to nearly two years in prison. Prosecutors say she supplied the methadone that her boyfriend, 27-year-old Christopher Allen, overdosed on in October 2015. She was sentenced for interference with law enforcement and distribution of methadone. Moody originally was charged with distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm or death but pleaded to lesser charges in February.

The principal of Ogden Elementary School has been inducted in the the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame, according to a press release from USD 383 Wednesday. Jim Armendariz  will receive the honor in Dodge City on June 2. He is the 15th teacher from the district to be inducted. Armendariz received his degree in elementary education from Kansas State University in 1988 and began his teaching career at Bluemont Elementary School in 1989, where he taught teaching 4th and 6th grade and serving as an assistant principal. A machine shed and outbuilding on property five miles east of Riley caught fire after midnight Monday and kept firefighters busy into Tuesday morning. Riley County Emergency Management Director and County Fire Chief Pat Collins told KMAN the blaze resulted in damages of approximately $185,000. “We got there and it was fully involved,” Collins said. “It appeared the fire started from a heat lamp that was keeping some chickens warm.” Collins said property was at 787 Marie Lane and that Bart Anstaett is the owner. James Toliver, 38, of Chicago, Illinois was arrested while at the Riley County Police Department yesterday evening. Toliver was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for distributing heroin and a Manhattan Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear. Toliver was issued a total bond of $23,000.00 causing him to remain confined at the time of this report.
