SALINA — Kansas State University has partnered with an airline to help students who want to be pilots with tuition and job placement. The Wichita Eagle reports that the university’s Polytechnic Campus in Salina has partnered with Piedmont Airlines and its cadet program. Piedmont’s cadet program will provide the benefits to select students enrolled at the school’s professional pilot program and who have their Certified Flight Instructor rating. TOPEKA — Kansas says it collected $39.5 million more in taxes than it expected in March to make it the 10th consecutive month revenues were greater than anticipated. The Department of Revenue reported Monday that tax collections last month were almost $490 million when the state’s official fiscal forecast predicted $450 million. The surplus was 8.8 percent. Since the start of its current budget year July 1, the state’s tax collections have exceeded expectations by about 7 percent. The state has collected $4.8 billion in taxes so far during the fiscal year and the official estimate predicted $4.5 billion. The…

Manhattan Area Technical College presented a free SUV to the family of Kansas National Guardsman Staff Sgt. Michael Tryon and his wife, Arlene, Friday inside the college’s automotive collision repair shop. The vehicle is a 2010 Mazda Tribute. Tryon, of Waterville, is a soldier with Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery. He recently returned from deployment to Afghanistan with the unit. In a press release from the Junction City Police Department, authorities received a report of a subject suffering from a gunshot wound at the Motel 6 at 1931 Lacy Drive at 11:14 p.m.. Riley County USD 378 Superintendent Cliff Williams has confirmed to KMAN that the school district and the Riley County Police Department are working together after an email was sent to parents about a suspicious man who approached a student Wednesday and tried to entice the child into his vehicle. TOPEKA — Legislation designed to harden Kansas schools against gunmen passed in the House Wednesday, though some lawmakers say the bill remains weak. The bill would set aside $5 million for schools to upgrade infrastructure to slow or thwart a school shooter, and require schools to work with state agencies to develop guidelines to prepare and respond to mass shootings.
