GREAT BEND — Authorities in Great Bend are investigating after the front doors of the school district building were shot out when the building was unoccupied. Barton County Sheriff Brian J. Bellendir said Monday that deputies responded to an alarm call at the USD 428 administrative offices late Sunday night. Deputies found that the front doors to the building had been shot repeatedly with a handgun, causing more than $6,000 in damage. No one was in the office at the time, and no injuries were reported. Lisa Curtright, 52, who was life-flighted to the University of Kansas Hospital, is from Manhattan. Lawrence Rogers, 52, who was life-flighted to Stormont Vail in Topeka with serious injuries, is from St. George. OLATHE — A man has been arrested in the death of a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy after crashing into his stopped patrol car. Overland Park Police spokesman, Officer John Lacy, says the 38-year-old suspect is jailed on suspicion of reckless second-degree murder in the death of Master Deputy Brandon Collins. The crash happened Sunday after the 45-year-old Collins stopped a driver for a traffic infraction on U.S. 69. Lacy says Collins had made contact with the driver and returned to his vehicle when it was rear-ended. Collins died at the scene. No one else was hurt. Lacy says the suspect fled on…

SHAWNEE — A woman and a good Samaritans who came to her aid are improving after they were hurt during a suburban Kansas City Wal-Mart parking lot attack in which a suspect was killed. Police said the woman was putting her child in her car Sunday afternoon in Shawnee when two suspects hit her in the head from behind. Shawnee police Maj. Dan Tennis says a person in the parking lot who tried to help was shot several times. Another good Samaritan then shot one of the suspects, who died at the scene. This past 9/11 weekend, nine members from the Manhattan Fire Department (MFD) climbed 110 floors while wearing their fire fighting gear for the Kansas City 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in remembrance of the events that occurred 9/11/2001.  A total of 343 Firefighters climbed 110 floors to honor of the 343 Fire Department New York (FDNY) Firefighters that died on 9/11/2001 while rescuing people from the World Trade Center Towers. Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has appointed Manhattan attorney Grant Bannister to be the next district court judge, serving Riley and Clay counties. FORT RILEY — It’s been 15 years since the events of Sept. 11, 2001. But on Sunday at Fort Riley, the pain of that day and the ripple effect it had on lives well after was still fresh. For the first time since 2013, a name was added to the Global War on Terrorism monument during Fort Riley’s 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony. WICHITA — Flooding is closing roads and schools in southern Kansas after the area was inundated with rain. The National Weather Service says the heaviest rainfall was in south-central Kansas, where 6 to 10 inches fell in a deluge that started Thursday night. Parts of southeast Kansas have received 6 to 8 inches of rain. Several creeks and rivers, including the Ninnescah and Arkansas, have overflowed their banks. HUTCHINSON — Live entertainment, stunt dogs and a new butter sculptor are luring visitors to the Kansas State Fair. The event started Friday and runs through Sept. 18 on the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. The fair draws a crowd of about 350,000 people each year. Performers will include pop artists Andy Grammer and Rachel Platten, along with the classic rock band Lynryd Skynyrd. Away from the grandstand, there’s a petting zoo, camel rides and giant pumpkins.
