U.S. Senator Jerry Moran’s staff notified Manhattan Area Technical College (MATC) that the institution has been selected to receive funding under the Strengthening Institutions Program (i.e., Title III), through the U.S. Department of Education. The grant can run for up to five years, and the funding for the first year (October 1, 2016-September 30, 2017) is $449,986.00. Strengthening Institutions Programs is designed to help eligible institutions of higher education become self-sufficient and expand capacity to serve at risk students, often through improving the academic quality, institutional management, and fiscal stability of the institution. ELLIS — A 3.2 magnitude earthquake has shaken part of northern Kansas. The Kansas Geological Survey says the quake struck Wednesday about 15 miles northwest of Hays. No damage has been reported. Scientists say damage is not likely in earthquakes below magnitude 4.0. It was centered about 150 miles away from the quake-prone Kansas counties of Harper and Sumner.

A local transportation official received some state recognition recently.  Flint Hills Area Transportation Agency Director Anne Smith was presented the Willie M Murry Award at the annual Kansas Public Transit Association (KPTA) meeting. The award is presented to an individual who has distinguished himself or herself in serving public transit in Kansas. It is named after Rev. Willie M Murry who was a dedicated pioneer for transit in the State of Kansas. Justin Brown, 26, of Saint George, Kansas was arrested on August 31, 2016 at approximately 9:05 PM while in the 400 block of Walters Drive. Brown was arrested on the offenses of domestic battery, criminal threat, aggravated assault, criminal trespass, violation of a protective order, and a warrant for the offense of failure to appear (original offense listed as violation of a protection order). Brown’s warrant had a bond of $5,000.00 and the additional offenses gave him “no bond.” He was confined at the time of this report. BUCYRUS, Kan. (AP) It could be months before an eastern Kansas business finds out if one of its peaches has broken a world record. KSHB-TV reports a peach weighing 763.39 grams — about 2 pounds — was picked Aug. 24 at Tubby Fruits Peach Orchard in Bucyrus. The current world record of 725 grams was set in 2002. Two certified scientists from the Johnson County Extension office weighed the peach using a verified scale provided by the USDA. The process was documented with both videos and photos. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback is making a point of soliciting opinions and ideas from educators, parents and others on school funding. Brownback had a news conference Wednesday to call for ideas and announce that he’s urging groups and individuals to email their comments or proposals. He also sent a letter to more than 50 school districts and organizations. Brownback is asking people to submit their comments by Nov. 30. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) A 17-year-old Kansas boy has been found guilty of two counts of first-degree for setting a fire that killed his mother and sister. The Hutchinson News reports Sam Vonachen also was convicted Wednesday of aggravated arson and attempted murder. During closing arguments, prosecutors said the teen, who was 13 at the time of the Sept. 26, 2013, blaze, wanted people to die. Vonachen’s attorney countered that he had a mental defect and wasn’t responsible for his actions.
