WICHITA — A bicyclist who was hit on a western Kansas highway last month while competing in a cross country race has died in a Wichita hospital. The Wichita Eagle reports that 64-year-old John Egbers, of St. Cloud, Minnesota, died Thursday. He was hit by a car from behind June 14 while he was riding eastbound on Kansas Highway 96 west of Scott City. Egbers suffered multiple broken bones, a collapsed lung and other injuries. Authorities say a 21-year-old man died while trying to walk across Interstate 70 during the early morning hours Sunday. The crash east of Manhattan forced the closure of I-70 for a couple hours after it happened shortly before 4 a.m. The Kansas Highway Patrol says Matthew Bailey of Mayetta died after he was struck by an eastbound Jeep Wrangler driven by a 23-year-old Cyrus Renfrow of Greenwood, South Carolina. Renfrow and his passenger were not hurt.
KANSAS CITY — Officials say a child is dead and at least three other people are critically injured after an apartment fire in Kansas City, Kansas. Fire Battalion Chief Morris Letcher says two children and two adults were taken to hospitals in critical condition following the blaze late Saturday morning, and that one child later died. Letcher says officials are not yet releasing the names or ages of the victims. Witnesses tell the Kansas City Star the fire began with an explosion that shook nearby buildings. WICHITA — A court filing asserts Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach has complied with a court order finding the state’s residents are not required to provide documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote. Kobach told U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson there are no longer any registrations in suspense or cancelled for lack of citizenship documents. The joint status report filed Sunday informs Robinson that Kobach is in full compliance with her order that all registrants receive the same information from county election offices and vote using the same poll books. LAWRENCE — The Kansas Highway Patrol says seven people were injured when a bus from Arizona collided with a pickup truck on the Kansas Turnpike near Lawrence. Patrol Capt. Joe Bott says the injured were taken to hospitals in Lawrence and the Kansas City area. He says none of the injuries were considered life-threatening. The Lawrence Journal-World reports the accident occurred on westbound Interstate 70 about 10 miles east of the Tonganoxie/Eudora exit. The Kansas Supreme Court has unanimously affirmed the Riley County District Court’s summary denial of Matthew Wilson’s post-sentence plea withdrawal motion, according to a news release from the court Friday. On the night of April 7, 2013, Wilson broke into an apartment and began shooting the occupants. During the ensuing panic, one occupant fired a defensive shot—meant for Wilson—that killed Michael Lowery, a Fort Riley soldier. Wilson later pled no contest to premeditated murder. OVERLAND PARK — Overland Park police say officers shot a man after he fired several rounds at officers. Spokesman John Lacy said the confrontation occurred early Friday while officers were responding to reports of shots being fired. Lacy says when police arrived, the suspect fired multiple times at them and several officers returned fire. No police were injured. The suspect is in critical condition at an area hospital. No other information was immediately available.
ATCHISON — Authorities say some type of incendiary device damaged eight businesses in downtown Atchison. Fire Chief Ted Graf says no one was injured the incident early Friday. The St. Joseph News-Press reports investigators responding to an alarm found structural damage and broken windows throughout the downtown business block. Graf says the scene eventually was determined to be safe enough to allow business owners into their damaged stores. He says some stores might reopen Friday afternoon. An investigation involving federal, state and local offices is continuing.
TOPEKA — Police say a small armory’s worth of weapons and ammunition were stolen this week from a Topeka house. The Topeka Capital-Journal reported Thursday that the thefts included 80 firearms, including rifles, shotguns and handguns. Thousands of rounds of ammunition were also taken in the heist. Officers were dispatched to the house just before 6 a.m. Tuesday. Police say a witness saw three men exit the rear of the residence. Topeka police are asking people to be aware of anyone attempting to sell a large amount of guns and ammunition.
