WINDOM — Authorities have identified the three people killed in a Kansas police chase as a fleeing California driver, his passenger and the driver of the vehicle they struck. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the pursuit began Wednesday when police in the town of Little River began pursuing the car that 29-year-old Miguel Casas, of El Monte, California, was driving on U.S. 56. The Kansas Highway Patrol says Casas crossed the center line for unknown reasons and struck another car near Windom. Casas was rushed to a hospital, where he later died. TOPEKA — Kansas health officials say the state’s worst measles outbreak in almost 30 years is officially over. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said Wednesday a measles outbreak that began at a Johnson County daycare in March has ended. It eventually spread to Miami and Linn counties. In total, 22 people in the three counties were infected. It was the most measles cases in one year in Kansas since 1990. A measles outbreak is considered over when no new cases have been identified and two separate 21-day incubation periods pass.

Updated: Thursday, 10:44 a.m. The Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 Board of Education approved a resolution to authorize a bond election for the district Wednesday night. During a work session last week, the board looked over three bond packages and all agreed on the $129 million option. Other choices included bond packages of $78 million and $97 million. The bond will be used to expand MHS West Campus to make room for freshman, renovating MHS East Campus for administrative offices and expanding the middle schools to move the sixth-grade class from the elementary schools. The Manhattan City Commission met at City Hall Tuesday night and accepted a large land donation from the Kansas Department of Transportation. KDOT first offered Manhattan a 99-acre property known as the VMI tract — located north of K-18 and east of the Scenic Meadows subdivision — with the condition the city does not develop the property back in February, but the commission rejected the donation by a 3 to 2 vote. Two juveniles with several weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, were arrested Monday afternoon in Saint George. Chief of Police Dan Trechter told KMAN Tuesday afternoon the juveniles were identified as a 16-year-old white male and a 17-year-old as a black male. TOPEKA — The Kansas Highway Patrol has arrested 16 protesters who blocked access to Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer’s ceremonial office by sitting outside the door. The people arrested Monday for misdemeanor criminal trespassing were part of the Poor People’s Campaign. They were protesting over health care issues and environmental problems. Colyer has opposed expanding the state’s Medicaid coverage for needy residents as contemplated by the 2010 federal Affordable Care Act. The Republican governor was traveling Monday.
