The local Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program has begun offering its families a new way to shop for their food benefits using an electronic benefit transaction card, according to a press release from the Riley County Health Department. At the state level, the public health nutrition program began piloting the new system in Shawnee County in September. The pilot was a success, and WIC families in Riley and Pottawatomie counties began receiving cards Jan. 10. From the beginning of the season, one thing was certain about this Kansas State basketball team. When the Wildcats are cold from long range, winning is hard. When K-State is cold from long range and the opponent is Kansas, winning is extremely hard. That was evident in the No. 7 Jayhawks’ 70-56 victory Monday night at Bramlage Coliseum as KU maintained its lead in the Big 12 standings. Former President of Malawi Joyce Banda presented at the 177th annual Landon Lecture on Monday. Banda is the first female president of Malawi and the fourth in African history. She titled her lecture “America’s Role in Promoting Gender Equality Worldwide: Lessons from Africa.” In her lecture she talked about gender equality, comparing her nation to the US. “It is our collective task to promote gender equality and development around the world,” said Banda, “I’ve been fortunate that everything that I’ve championed in my life comes from personal experience.” Banda also said in her lecture that the US has had a…

TOPEKA — The Kansas Legislature requires interns to sign agreements to keep anything that takes place or is said in a lawmaker’s office confidential, or the interns could be fired. Employment law experts who reviewed the agreement for The Kansas Star say it is written so broadly it could deter interns from reporting harassment or illegal activity, and might violate the First Amendment. Legislative leaders say the agreement is intended to remind interns that private political discussions should stay private, although they acknowledge the intention is not clear. A proposal to repurpose Pottawatomie County’s Old Jail was heard during Monday’s County Commission meeting. This came via Dru Clarke, who provided both long and short-term initiatives for the project, the former including the conversion of the building into a Welcome Center.  Clarke said such a facility would be able to distribute information about the attractions of the region, and draw people north off the corridors of 24 and interstate 70, to the “blue highways” and the rural communities that embrace those roads and landscapes. Officers responded to the report of an injury accident near the intersection of Fort Riley Blvd. and Westwood Rd. in Manhattan on January 26, 2018 at approximately 7:44 AM. When officers arrived on scene, they found a 2003 Chevy Silverado driven by Tyler Welfringer, 19, of Manhattan, had struck a 2003 Cadillac CTS driven by Sandra Dillard, 76, of Manhattan. Dillard was transported to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Welfringer was issued a citation for failure to stop at a red light. Kansas State used a last-minute rally in regulation on Sunday evening at Allen Fieldhouse to register a 63-59 overtime win over Kansas. K-State has now won eight straight in the series. Kansas State (12-9, 4-6 Big 12) was led by sophomore forward Peyton Williams with a game-high 23 points, eight rebounds and a career-high tying five blocked shots. Over the last week or so, Kansas State fans have taken to social media and used the hashtag of #DeanWolf to support the star forward Dean Wade as he’s led the charge during Kansas State’s three game winning streak. In the final minutes against Georgia on Saturday the hashtag #DeanWolf came alive and so did the Wildcats.
