Via Christi Hospital named its first The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses recipient during a brief ceremony July 21 at the hospital’s Birth and Women’s Center. Jessi Erickson, RN, a labor and delivery nurse, received the honor. Erickson, who hails from Wamego, has worked for Via Christi Hospital for 11 years. “Back to Basics” is the theme for this year’s state conference for Local Emergency Planning Committees being held in Manhattan. David Whitfell with the Kansas Division of Emergency Management was pleased with the nearly 100 in attendance, representing counties from across the state. The region is in a heat advisory for the foreseeable future and just on cue for fair time in Manhattan. The 2016 Riley County Fair gets going Thursday night with the first night of the 81st Annual Kaw Valley Rodeo at 8 p.m. in Wells Arena in CicCo Park. Before that, the opening parade for the fair starts at 6 p.m. through Poyntz Avenue. It was a busy Thursday morning at the Riley County Fairgrounds, filled with area 4-Hers entering projects and preparing the various barns for animals. A Wakefiled man was arrested on Wednesday. Officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Joshua Schultz, 34. Schultz was arrested on a warrant from Dickinson County for probation violation and was given a bond of $25,000. This arrest took place in the 2100 block of Fort Riley Blvd. as officers were conducting a welfare check on another subject.

The final mill levy is far from set, but Lew Faust had some good news for USD 383 board members at last night’s meeting. Thanks to an increase in property valuation and some changes in how funds are applied to schools, the mill levy might not be changed too much for the upcoming year. Faust, director of business services, said he would like to see the mill levy remain neutral. However, Faust also entertained the idea of raising the mill levy in order to increase the cost of living fund which would help pay teacher’s salaries and also leave some cash…

(AP) The Latest on the fatal shooting of an officer from Kansas City, Kansas (all times local): 4:35 p.m. Funeral services have been scheduled for a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer killed in the line of duty. Capt. Robert Melton was shot and killed Tuesday while looking for suspects in an earlier drive-by shooting. Two suspects are in custody but formal charges haven’t been filed. Richard Tilton, 43, was convicted of one count of aggravated indecent liberties of a child under 13 and 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a child in May of this year. On Wednesday, Tilton received the maximum sentence of life in prison plus 73 months, as well as lifetime parole and electronic monitoring if he is ever released from the Department of Corrections. After a mandatory term of 25 years, Tilton will go in front of a parole board to determine whether or not he is eligible for parole. Captain Robert Melton of Kansas City, Kansas was shot and killed Tuesday while approaching the suspect of an earlier shooting in the area. Capt. Melton was not only a seasoned officer of the Kansas City Police Department, but was also a retired Captain in the Kansas Army National Guard. Melton first enlisted into the Kansas Army National Guard in 1986, commissioned as an officer in 1997, and retired from the service in 2012. Kansas State University Police and emergency personnel from the Manhattan Fire Department and Riley County EMS responded to the Seaton Hall construction site on the Manhattan campus for a workplace accident shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday. A male worker was injured after a fall at the construction site. He was taken to Manhattan’s Via Christi Hospital. Members of the K-State Environmental Health and Safety team also responded. The accident is under investigation.
