LEAVENWORTH- Leavenworth police say they’ve made an arrest in connection with an 85-year-old woman’s weekend death. Investigators say Anna Higgins of Leavenworth was found dead Sunday afternoon in a home. Police did not publicly say how Higgins was killed, though investigators expect to turn over their reports to prosecutors on Tuesday. No charges had been filed as of Monday.

KANSAS CITY, MO- An orangutan got to the top of a wall surrounding the Kansas City Zoo’s ape exhibit, but quickly returned to the enclosure without any contact with zoo visitors. The zoo instructed visitors to go indoors until the situation was resolved Sunday afternoon. Zoo spokeswoman Julie Neemeyer told The Kansas City Star (http://j.mp/29c4fGp ) there were no injuries, and the 17-year-old female Borneo orangutan didn’t have to be tranquilized. TOPEKA- A 26-year-old Kansas man who climbed onto a roof to launch fireworks is dead after falling from atop his Topeka home. The Topeka Capital-Journal (http://bit.ly/29L99ap) reports Christen Locke fell from the roof after he was injured by a firework just after midnight Tuesday morning. Topeka police Lt. Jennifer Cross says the call was originally reported as a fall but an investigation revealed the fireworks accident. Locke was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.
Update (8:49 P.M.) Kansas State University has released the name of a K-State student who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday morning. Justin Brickey, a senior in engineering from Kansas City was found outside of a Jardine Apartment building shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday. Update (11:30 A.M.) The Kansas State University Police Department is currently investigating the July 5 suicide of a K-State student at the Jardine Apartment Complex on the Manhattan campus. A Colorado man is at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka after an accident on Interstate 70 on Saturday morning. Deputies with the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to westbound mile marker 338 shortly before 5 o’clock. 36-year old Robert Allen Hutchison, of Littleton, Colorado, was driving his 2007 freight truck when it drifted off the road and overturned across the median on its’ left side. Hutchison was transported to Topeka to be treated for his injuries. It is unknown if he was wearing his seatbelt.
Geary County Sheriff’s Deputies have responded to two separate vehicle accidents so far this weekend. At 4:51 on Friday afternoon deputies responded to the area of I-70 mile marker 294 for a two-vehicle accident involving minor injuries. A 1997 blue Chevrolet pickup driven by Aaron Powers, of Chapman, went to make an improper u-turn in the median when a 2004 Mercedes driven by a Matthew Cuss, of Lawrence, tried to avoid hitting the pickup and went towards the median. Manhattan PEO Chapter IW presented a $1,200 continuing education grant this week to Manhattan Christian College student Kathy Smith, who is majoring in the LEAD program, with an emphasis in Business Management and Ethics.
