Kansas State wasn’t a polished team in its season opener Saturday, but the Wildcats did show glimpses of how good they could be once they are. Big plays from cornerback D.J. Manhattan Firefighters were called to a structure fire on Dondee Drive early Friday morning. Investigators were reportedly on the scene. MFD indicates the home was vacant and damage is estimated at $5,000. MFD Asst. Chief Sam Dameron tells KMAN the call came in shortly before 4:30 a.m. in the area of Dondee and Davis. 2911 Dondee was the location. Dameron adds crews quickly extinguished the small fire.

Hundreds of Wildcat fans made their way to City Park Thursday night to ring in the new school year and to celebrate the opening weekend of Wildcat football. It’s looking likely plans for a new fire station in Leonardville will go ahead. Last week it was learned the Kansas Department of Transportation had put the project on hold, because of entrances and exits at Barton Road — which is also Highway 24. Riley County Emergency Management Director and County Fire Chief Pat Collins told KMAN Thursday morning KDOT has reviewed adjustments to the plan and that he’s optimistic they will okay it. CHENEY — The U.S. Geological Survey says a 3.4 magnitude earthquake has rattled south-central Kansas. The Wichita Eagle reports that the quake was reported early Thursday about 2 miles southeast of Cheney. A smaller 2.9 magnitude quake was recorded just after 10 a.m. Sunday in Sumner County. Scientists say damage is not likely in earthquakes below magnitude 4.0.

Officers filed a report for rape in Manhattan on Aug. 28, 2017. Officers listed a 53 year old female as the victim from the rape case first filed in 1986. The suspect in the case was just recently identified after a finger print comparison by the KBI. The suspect is now deceased. A judge denied a motion to suppress evidence Tuesday for a Manhattan man facing first-degree murder. Andrew Gibson is being charged with the killing of 3-month-old Serenity Reich in the 500 block of Stone Creek Drive on May 5, 2016. Gibson’s defense argued investigators were not invited into Gibson’s home and said body cameras should’ve been deactivated. In a November 2016 preliminary hearing, Riley County Police Department Detective Bryan Johnson testified that Gibson was watching after Reich and two other children in his apartment that evening. TOPEKA — The secretary of the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services is promoting a plan to turn over the troubled Osawatomie State Hospital to a private company. Secretary Tim Keck presented information in Topeka Wednesday about Correct Care Recovery Solutions’ bid to rebuild and run Osawatomie, which lost federal certification in 2015. Correct Care runs mental health facilities around the country. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Keck believes Correct Care could run the hospital at a lower cost and more effectively recruit staff.
